OK first rule is no bashing or have a brand or product choice war.
Just post what you did and ignore everyone else's post.
I just want to get a good idea of what people did when paint their car. How much and how many steps they took.
If you rattled caned your car feel free to chime in and no one poking fun at them.
If we follow the rules we should have a nice thread with tons of good comparable info.
[Be adults Plz]
Some general questions:
How much paint did you use?
What color, brand and type?
How many coats?
Primer?
Wet sanded?
Clear coated?
clear coated, wet sanded and buffed?
Drying?
Factory match fish eye paint job?
Baby bottom smooth $20,000 paint job.
$60 a pint paint?
$20 a gallon Ebay paint?
23 rattle cans and a 12 pack?
Pics welcome.

I painted my rear deck under the spoiler with a shaker can. I sanded the hell out of the thing until I hit primer. Then I fixed the spoiler so it wouldnt leak into the trunk anymore (there was a bend and i hammered it down). I didn't prime it, but it's no big deal. I used a shaker can with a close match a few times... about 4 or 5 coats.
When i sanded I ended with 2000 grit.

I did mine in 1 stage Urethayne...About a week of body work, rattle can primer...Wiped it all down with thinner...Pulled it on top of a tarp and sprayed it in the driveway. 5 coats, more thinner each time to bring out the shine. I used about a 1/2 a gallon between little spills etc. I used a fast reducer and fast hardner so it set up quick enough so nothing got into it. Then I let it sit over night before unmasking it. Paint was $125 for 1 gallon of paint and everything to mix it. Its Martin Senor paint, Local paint stores and certain NAPAs carry it, special order, Mine is Oxford White, very nice shine and it has a little pearl mixed in. I've got compliments on my paint...And dont have any pics, Im gonna hafta get some after I get my new rims and cowl...NEXT...

Damn, you should know rattle can primer is njo good for painting, it will peel in no time.
I used a good primer, 2K100 about 100 bucks a gallon, then im using DuPont paint, ten DuPont Select clear and hardener.
Paint, 3 coats
Clear , 3 coats
let it dry overnight, wetsnad or sut it with a special DA with 1500 grit, then compound the car, glaze it, and wax, now your done...
I should mention that i work at a body shop, so its all professional **** thats not sold to individuals unless you go to a shop and ask them to order it.

ok 1st of no mines not done but i know how and what il be doing pretty much everything.
my car had rust spots and dents that were grinded filled and sanded smooth primered, glazing puttyied over re primed,
then whole car wet sanded w/ 1000.
will either sand w/ 400 then paint or may go the extra mile and wet sand 220 now reprime then wet sand 400 or 1000 and paint.
my paints single stage acrylic enamel centari brand excellent brand!!!
bout 125 a gallon
reducer bout 25 a gallon i think?
hardner gloss 50 a pint i think maybe a quart but pretty sure a pint.
that stuf makes paint dry quicker and brings shine to the top when dry very awesome look and makes paint very hard to help resist scratches and chips.
its almost a must when u cant paint in paint booth n all that crap.
in what they call less then perfect conditions.
more then likely goin w/ silver metallic w/ big flakes very lite silver not the goldish kind either the bright lite toned silver.
and some metallic black stripes maybe.
not just goin to be all silver i dont think . im goin to try and do something special and different.
once its all done im goin to wet sand w/ thousand grit, then use rubbing compund and some glazes maybe like machine glaze and hand glaze that kind thing to make it baby bottom smooth or smoother. w/ the compunds and a buffer to do this lol.
and thats about it i guess.
will update tho and post pics when i do apint which will be when weather here in wv turns to 60 or above n stays that way.

I did all the body work.....then primed 6 coats and wet sanded w/ 400 between each coat and after wetsanding each coat i wiped it down w/ wax and grase remover. then the paint time I wetsanded it w/ 600 wet and wax and grease removered it all then tack ragged the whole car then i put 4 coats of PPG single stage on it. 15 min in between each coat for a flash time. The paint ran me about 185 w/ reducer and hardner. I used about a gallon of paint. Then i let it set about 2 days and color sanded it then used 3m perfect-it compund, then perfect it machine glaze, then perfect it hand glaze, then waxed it. It has no texture whatsoever now. no fisheyes. It looks like a red tinted mirror when its clean.

i never painted a car but a guy i know did his with a few cans of primer (spay cans) , a case of spray paint and a few cans of clear coat. he sanded the hell out of it, going to finer grit each time, then primer, more sanding, paint , a little fine sanding between coats. Then when he had all the paint coats done he wet sanded it with VERY thin grit(i wish i knew the exact #) wiped it down and clear coated it.
He had that car for 5 years and everyone who saw it loved the paint job. I think the end result of the paint job is 80% prep and 20% of what brand and what method you used.
Look at macco for an example, they dont use rattle cans, but look at how bad some of there jobs turn out.
PRep work!!!! :lala:
