Those are the jerks that said that they have superior design skills...much better than american.
Why is it american cars are so sought after over there if we have such poor design skills?

Eh thats not bad at all i personally really love the iroc hood so seeing it in cf is kinda cool. And those would be the same guys who do the heat extraction hood that looks rediculously nice
Well if youd stop for a minute to think you could probably answer your own questions.
First of all there are many reasons they would want american cars. Japanese cars dont come with V8's, its something different then you see every day, because they felt like it im sure i could come up with 100 more but im tired and on my way to bed.
And yes they do in general have superior skills then that of which you see in america. In the US in general we have large quantities of low skilled workers. There are many fiberglass companies as well as carbon fiber and whatever other trade you can think of and most of them will be of average quality. Over in japan they have the opposite a very low number of tradesman, but the ones they do have are damn good at what they do. Also you can tell just by the design and as far as we can tell from the pictures of the fit of their hoods that they are one of the best at what they do and have the right to say yes they are better then everyone else.
DISCLAIMER: this is not to say that extremely high quality products and highly skilled people dont exist in north america. But for reasons stated above they do have the right to say what they did.
Think of carbon fibre the exact same as fiberglass just using very different materials. Yes carbon fibre can be painted

Yes I thought about it, I knew the answer even before i posted the question. I just dont praise people with a self serving bias who don't give credit where credit is really due.
We are talking about the hood, NOT their workforce.

I dunno, I've seen CF parts painted normal body color. Most people just prefer to use only clear to show off the CF look. But other guys that do it just for the weight savings have no problem painting over CF.

actually most "plain" carbon fiber parts are actually painted over already.... usually with automotive clear coat since it has the needed UV qualitys to prevent clouding and yellowing, while maintaining a high gloss...
so yea, you could paint it however you want...
but unless it was made as thin, and carfully braced to take advantage of CFs strengths and it was made in a autoclave , its not any lighter then a fiberglass one anyway.

and smart north americans are taking the best of both worlds..
highly efficent designs, combined with large displacement and boost... and they make more power, in a easily controlled fashon, then anyone else.
the ONLY reason the japs dont use larger displacement is the HUGE taxes its goverment enforces on it.

I would also point out the unemployment rates in japan are much higher than ours, hence they better do the best job they can to keep that job. also for those reasons they pay wages much lower than ours. the result are very tight tolerances and workmanship. take the USA any day!!!!!!

a round of golf costs like a thousand dollars. but they can still pay wages that are low compared to the cost of living there. that is more what I meant.

Oh yeah, I'm sorry... the plain corbon fiber look is so "sick" I'm sorry... geez im dumb. That Camaro needs a"Hyperformance" sticker across the hood.
Again I love the plain carbon fiber look... These are some sweet race and super cars... I like how it gives that extra 100 hp... You kids and your horrible taste... Thats what happens when your raised on Rap music and Fast and the Furious movies... If you want a Honda, go buy one. Otherwise paint your damn hood.

to get back to the real reason I posted this in the first place, this is mearly a way to save weight on our cars. I never said leave it like that. if you don't like the look you can paint it, then you have an otherwise stock looking hood but get to shave off a lot of weight. it should be common knowledge that our hoods weigh a lot, and if you don't know that take your hood off sometime and you will see what I am talking about. it makes for the ablity to make a "sleeper" car because it looks stock. I for one welcome carbon fiber parts, anything to bring our cars to a better race weight.
i'd kill for a CF stock replacement hood that would allow me to run my blisters.......hell even a fiberglass one. i perfer the stock look so much more but after running with my fiberglass ss hood i don't know if i could ever go back to the heavy stock hood.
Knyghtmare, please stop trying to ruin the thread. We are talking about carbon fiber hoods for THIRDGENS not a bunch of sport compacts. What it looks like on a sport compact does not apply here, so please stop wasting our time. If you dont have anything constructive to add, please do not post. You stated your opinion already, what more are you going to accomplish by continuing to bash someones idea? Give it a rest already.
If you guys want more info on this hood, do a search. Members of this website have already contacted the manufacturers of that specific hood in Japan and worked out pricing. I have attempted to get a mold made in the USA but it did not work out. But I was quoted $800 for a stock CF replica plus shipping out of Calfornia.

Its funny every time this CF posty comes up.
as I said befor. CF alone is No stronger or lighter then a good roven woven glass. Esp if its a hand layed mold. Deff no lighter.
Now if its vacuume baged or autoclaved thats diff. It will be lighter.
You want Stronger you need to steup upto a carbon/kevlar mix.
Ive said It befor. You guys want a CF or glass stock iroc hood I want 10 Solid buys. I've posted befor the CF would be around the 800-1000 mark. roven woven glass obviouslly less. Last time this poped up people said they wanted, wanted wanted. but No solid commitments. etc...

Knyghtmare how dumb can you be? The company that took the picture of that car is trying to sell a carbon fibre hood. Why would you bother painting it if youre trying to sell it because then it looks no different from any other style hood and i guarantee they want to emphasize the fact that its cf. Regardless the majority of people here agree that non painted cf doesnt look great and would rather have a painted part.
Hey there's another hookup right there, give Chris a call. The guys I talked to earlier (well I didnt talk to them, my car club did) was PJ Automotive, but they required a mold. That was back in Feb '04, so maybe they still might do it. But just like Chris they wanted to do a GP of 10, just they would allow us to mix match makes/models.
If I had a CF hood I would only paint portions of it. I would want to leave some parts unpainted so the CF stands out in a design (just imagine flames, or a design based off a cowl or scoop, or even inverted cowl). Car would also have to be a dark color so it blends a little better. But hey thats just me ...

Just because it has a Lexus badge dosnt mean its a Lexus.

Its a Toyota Tacoma. In Japan Lexus and Toyota are the same thing, so the guy probably thought it was "JDM tite".
Anyway, gotta keep this thread going ...

i dont think the majorty here is ever going to get this.
i dont think they realize that CF is made the exact same way as fiberglass.... you can even use the same resins if you wanted to.
so you get zero weight savings over fiberglass.
minimal to zero stiffness increase...

I understand that a fiberglass and a carbon fiber hood weigh about the same. the reason I feel these are neat is that they are a factory replica hood. I have never seen I fiber glass factory hood. so if you want the weight savings with that stock look this is a way to go. if someone could make a fiber glass hood for cheaper that weights the same I say more power to them. which leads me to ask the question why do they need on of those hoods to make a mold? why can't they use a factory metal hood to make the mold?

i forget the link to the place, but a quick search on here should yeild some results.

up22 is the only company that makes a replica rs hood in fiberglass and no one makes an iroc replica hood like the one in the picture
i don't care if it's CF or fiberglass but i definately would prefer to have a stock design hood that's lightweight. don't understand why they copied the rs hood and not the iroc but what's done is done....
as far as my own, i have no idea what i would do if it were CF

The only Added strenght is gona be a CF/Kevlar.
Nobody makes a IROC hood 1992rs/ss .
As for the mold. I plan to do it off a stock 91-92 Hood.
People asking about the Inverted Scoop hood is the one where talk about getting one for a Mold comes from. It would be easier that way. It could be done without one but Alot more time consuming and trial and error in the polly foam stage
as i've always told you i'm always up for one....however it's hard to justify spending over 1,000+ to have a single one special made. definately interested though if it ever comes about. i'll give you half and my ss hood!

but seriously it would be nice...i like the stock hood so much more. although that special japanese one is nice too.

I have 1 guy who is a SOLID comitment for a 1 off CF hood with a viper duct grafted in the front. once I do drop the ball and make a mold.
