Burnouts

ok guys dont call me dumb or laugh at me. But I love my car to pieces and dont want to hurt anything, *well that is except for tires* but I have a 305 TPI/w 5 speed manual tranny. Cars got some decent power. Every now and then I like to spin the tires. Really though I am a cautious driver and try not to attract too much attention.

So when I do spin my tires its usually in first gear, and at that taking off from a stop light or intersections.

The question I have. is How do I do a burnout. *safely* so as I dont go breaking something. I see some video's and pictures of their cars covered in smoke. I know that a great part of this may be because of automatic trannies, Also hearing that ppl got up to 3rd gear b4 they let off of the break and spun for a fair distance.

I want to know the safe way of doing break burns with a standard. Using the E-brake wouldn't work because the front wheels are free moving with E-brake on. so that wont work.

I'm buying new wheels and tires soon... and want to give my old tires a going off party.. with a BANG!! wanna burn em off. Maybe I could rig up a brace that I can put against the seat to hold the break peddal down while the clutch is down and other foot revving up the engine.

anyone have any better solutions?

Line locks? never heard of that. I've heard of ppl clamping vice grips over their break lines in front keeping the fluid in the lines after break pedal is released.

Explain your line lock thing. and is it hard to install?

Sorry if I sound like a nub. I'm still learning a lot about my camaro. I'm driving my girlfriend nuts. Since I joined this board I've been outside almost every day looking at this and that........ thinking of paint schemes, new parts, mods, and all that fun stuff..

Explain this line lock system of yours.

THANKS :yourock:

Line locks.....

What they do is "lock" the brake "line" and keep the front brakes on, while releasing the rear ones.....

You simply pretty the brake pedal, flip the switch which will lock only the front brakes on, then release the pedal, effectivly releasing the pressure from tthe back brakes........

Accelerate and the back wheels spin, meanwhile the front brakes are still on.....

Flip swtich which will dis-engage the front brakes and you begin to move........

is this an expensive mod to purchase? and where can I find them. or should I just do a search for line locks.

Are all line locs the same? or are there certain sets for certain cars?

when i do a burnout with my auto i hold the brake down and hit the gas..BUT bcuz i have the brake held down it is also pressing the rear brakes too right?? (i have rear disk) so if i put a line lock on my car it will put less strain on the rear brakes and possibly make it easier to spin tires, right?? how hard r they to install?

EDIT: is THIS good?? only 70 bucks

you can search for more.

i ONLY do burnouts at the strip... i'll spin the tires on the street once in awhile, but i dont use the brake for it..

at the track, just hold the brake with one half of your foot, hold the RPMs with the other half, then dump the clutch. tilt your foot to maintain them.
easier then it sounds.

I have a Hurst Line lock on my car, it works awesome, and I feel alot better doin burnouts because my rear brakes aren't getting tortured and it's a little easier on the drivetrain.

That would work perfect for your 5speed car

not too hard.
mount it with two screws, screw in the adapters, then bend some brake line to it.
then bleed the brakes, and check for leaks.

line lock is sweet . It the only right way to do a burnout . When i used to have the 9 bolt rear end the rear brakes didnt work so i could do burnouts without hurnting anything.

Mr dude is right on about how to do it without a line lock. Its realy not that hard, and once you get used to it, its like 2nd nature, and its addictive. Thats what i did in this photo, at the burnout contest. BTW that pic was in the first 20 seconds. i went on for atleast 2 minutes. My tires were brand new (didnt know about burnout contest, or else i wouldnt have waisted my money) and i drove home on belts.

just heel-toe it.

I actually use the left and right side of my right foot instead of heal and toe.

Basically, I hold the clutch down with my left foot, put the left side of my foot on the break, and then roll my foot to the right to apply gas. I rev it up to whatever RPM I think I need, normaly around 3k, then dump the clutch while using my right foot to get the feel of how much break or gas I need.....

its a little tricky to get used to, but eventually you will get the feel of how much break, and how much gas you need.

Some people also dump the clutch, let the car roll a sec while moving the left foot to the break and then stopping the car while using copious amounts of gas so they don't stop the back tires also.

But yeah, techincally a line lock is best.
