How can I clean up this engine block? PIC*

Hey guys, my never ending project has made a TON of progress but I am striving for profection which means lots of work! Anyway, when I got this car last year it had 68K original miles and now it has 72K. The engine looked like it had been neglected (sitting) for awhile. I changed the intake manifold with a Edelbrock Performer TBI and I have chrome bowtie valve covers to go on as soon as I have time. I just hate the rusted engine block! In the pic you can see the rusty looking front bock, water pump, and timing cover. What can I do to clean this up??

well if you wanted you could rip everything off of the front of the motor and remove the exhaust manifolds and tape everything off and paint the block or remove the motor and do it

Remove the motor and paint it. Then while it is out, what better opportunity to clean up and paint the rest of the bay!

Yeah, you're right about the snorkle tube...I just left it on there to throw a little more air into the engine. The engine bay isn't rusty, just the stupid strut tower tops, but I was going to get it painted anyway.

I was going to say... take off the snorkel and replace the strut mounts. As for the block... there's not much you can do besides sand it or paint it. Sanding won't really last that long either. You have centerbolt valve covers, it looks like... get a nice loom for the spark plug wires and route them nice.

Do what I did... wrap everything with newspaper and spray the block with engine paint. If you are careful and take your time, it works pretty well.

Aww damn I was about to say the same thing, cover everything up with foil, it works much better and can fit anywhere and around any curve. Then spray away with what ever color you wish.

I'd paint the block black and the pump aluminum, it wll look good.

Get rid of that A.I.R pump, and if your AC does not work or you dont use it ditch that too. I got ride oh mine recently and it frees up Soo much space.

U know the right way is takeing everything out and sanding and painting. But hell that takes to long lol. What i have done a bunch of times is get some black paint and the nozzel from some carb cleaner. Put that on the paint can with the straw. U can get in all the little places with it and u will not have to tape that much up.
