Custom Racing Helmet?
Hey guys, I was just curious about something...
Me and my dad were just talking about 'back in the day' when he used to race his '73 Z28 in autocross races, because he knows I am kinda interested in trying it out next summer in my Z28.
One of the things he mentioned is that if I do decide to try it, I'll need a helmet, since the ones he used aren't up to current safety specs.
Last night, I saw Batman Forever with a friend of mine (yea yea, I know...
) and I just thought of something. I just remembered that in the movie, they showed a few good shots of Robin's motorcycle helmet, from before he was Robin. Anyway, it looked like a REALLY nicely painted helmet... really cool airbrushed design on it.
So this is what I was wondering about... If I do get myself a helmet for next summer, I want to start with a plain one and give it my own special paint job.
How do I do this? How would I prep the helmet? What kind of paint do I use? Do I need to use primer? etc etc....
Anyone?

Might get an info card with the helmet to show what paints to use and not to use. I just bought a Simpson Bandit helmet a couple weeks ago and it had a little info card. Think Laquer paints were out of the question. Be sure to check for that or contact the company.

I have used ratle cans on all teh welding hoods i've done and they came out sweet, except when your welding overhead and stuff starts landing on it
I always start by maskign the entire helmet over and and drawing out or printing out what i want and taping it on then cutting it out using a good razor blade, if theres a base coat under it though be carefull not to cut to deep into it. Personally i'd go black with chamelon designs in it that always is cool,
I finalyl get to start doing up my nice autodarkening hood this week, gonna do it candy apple with some ghost work, not sure aobut the ghost stuff though yet, or if i'll even use any ghost but i can only find rattle can candy in some testors model paint since i dont want to pay the cash for a regular candy paint, mix and spray.
Skys teh limit when it comes to designs on paint, think of it try to draw it then go for it.

Should be just the same, strip it down to just the shell and start sanding to dull it up. Just make sure you don't use a paint that's not compatible.

Would a racing helmet and welding mask be different? I mean, as far as this kind of work goes?

Yes! Do you really want to cheap out and rattle can a 250+ dollar race helmet? To do it right, you need to strip off everything like the visor, inside padding and anything else attached to the shell. A welding helmet has a lot less things and comes apart easier and probably just plastic. The race helmet is going to be fibreglass or carbon fibre.

Anyone have any suggestions on what to do (for a paintjob)?
