FORMULA owners-NEED your help

I have a 1988 Formula 350 (black) going in for a paint job on Monday. I want to paint those "ugly" bumperettes on front and back bumpers the same colour as the body. The body shop has said that the paint might not stick on them.
Has anyone painted them and found problems afterwards? Also; how do they attach...do they just snap on or are they attached from the back of the bumper?
Your help in this matter is urgrently required..
Thanks

My bumberettes have been painted for about 2 years now. I was even rear-ended by someone and the paint just cracked, still not peeling off.

Can you go to a different shop in your area and get a second opinion? A good shop should know how to do it, not tell you "it might not stick."

i also have a black 88 formula 350, my car is going to be painted this spring. in my opinion if you are going to keep the car black i would say don't paint them just clean them up and you will barely notice them. if your going with different color and want them to match, just rember they are rubber and the paint will probably crack eventually, just like on the stupid rubber wing, and end up looking like crap.

i also purchased an 84 T/A wing to replace that *** awful rubber thing on the hatch. Good luck.

A good shop can still have it's faults i suppose.. There are a lot of corrput people that shouldn't have their hands on a paint gun.

But from my experiences..the only reason that you would say that "it might not stick" is because there is never a guarantee that the paint or primer will adhere to the bumperettes.. Especially if it has been conditioned with armor all for a long period of time..

in defense of the shops..

I think that if they use the proper releasing agent on the bumperettes, and make sure they are pre-cleaned well, you shouldn't have a problem. (plus it looks great body color)

I never liked those black bumper things either so i replaced my bumper covers on my Formula with ones off my old 84 Firebird.

If they wont guarantee them the same as the rest of the paint/body work - then I'd leave them black. You dont want them flaking off and the shop just telling you "told ya so"...

HTH...

I agree that if the car is staying black, clean them up and keep them unpainted. maybe use some of the forever black dye on them to make them look like new. if you are going a different color then paint them but it is a risk if you do.
