Intake options...

Trying to make a decision here, and I wanted some input from you guys. I can get my HSR powder coated for $80, or ceramic coated for $110. Was just curious what you all thought about either, and if anyone had some pics of either they could post up for me. He's also gonna ceramic my headers for $150. These sound like reasonable prices? Anyway, thanks in advance for any input/pics, I appreciate it.

Powder coat, ceramic coating will cause the intake to hold heat.

i ceramic coated a plenum once, wish i never did it... looked nice but ceramic coating wears off if you polish to much like i do.

kept things hot too... i wouldn't recommend it. either paint it or polish it.

Thanks for the advice Kandied. I'll stay away from the ceramic, I didn't realize it would keep things hot like that. Oh well, I know now. So does powder coating do the same thing? If it does, I suppose I'll just leave it the way it is. I don't really want to polish it, although it would look nice, it's not gonna be a show car. I just thought the powder coat would be kinda cool. Make it match the color theme of the car. Thanks again guys!

Deff go powder ceramic will hold the Heat in. Thats what ceramic is made to do.

Prices are on Par..

Who is doing the headers? MAKE SURE they have a VIBRATORY POLISHER to do them right or dont waste the $150 to get em done because it wont last.

Make sure they do the complete inside. and have a good warrenty. Should be lifetime if New parts or 3year on used.

Have any more questions drop me a e-mail I do ceramic, thermal and powder coatings.

Inside of what headers should look like
http://www.cecoatings.com/images/coa...ompsInside.jpg

They should be green/grey when done.

funny you should mention that, some coaters leave the insides alone... definately check to make sure they don't.

last night i got a bright idea....and today i started on it...i took my HSR plenum to school, and i milled the top of the ribs off, took 14 thousandths or so off, so it was down to shiney metal, and now i'm in the process of sanding it and eventually wetsanding it...it should be done within a couple days...then i'm paintin the grooves red...i think it'll turn out real nice....just figured i'd give you an idea for something to do..

I like the ribs on there too. If I wanted them off, I would just take it to work and use the CNC mill. My original idea was to powder coat the whole intake black, then paint in between the ribs red. The car is going to be painted back black, with the current black leather seats, then red carpet, and red calipers to break up the black. So I thought the intake would be pretty decent like that. I dunno, what do you guys think of that?

hey notice all you guys have really nice plug wires.. 2 questions for ya.

do the plugs come with all 90* boots

and if so are they fitted for the specific length of the engine??

right now im using 95 chevy truck wires because they all come with 90* boots.. but most the wires are too long and look like crap.

oh and who makes them and where did you get them?

Thanks man.....I did that a couple years ago and whenever I'm at a car show, you should see people do the "double take" They are like....."something looks different but I don't know what it is" What are you going to do about the dist. cover? I ended up making one out of 6061 flat stock because you can't mill the ribs off an aluminum cover without cutting through.

Killjoy....I used an MSD 90 degree boot universal set....you just have to cut them to the length you want and crimp on the terminals....it's pretty easy to do and it's the only way to get them to look nice.

90-irocdx3...nope, the other side is a secret j/k...I'll see what I can dig up.

okay guys, i got it milled off, polished up, the ribs are pretty shiney on top...then i tryed this trick i saw on trucks, tape off around the ribs, paint the whole thing and wipe off the paint on the ribs with like acetone...let me tell ya, this did not work...so now i got the whole top all red, i can't think of a good way to get the paint off the top of the ribs besides milling it off...adn that means milling off the freshly polished aluminum...and i'm still not sure if i would like it...so i'm thinking about just milling off the whole thing....so i got a question about that...do i just mill it all the way down and then just sand the whole intake plenum or what? how did you do that? i'm starting to really like ribless ...i figure if i mill it all off, i could use an orbital sander and start with like 100 grit and work my way up...it will go alot faster with a powertool....any input would be great...i'm gonna mill the ribs off sometime this week while i still have access to a mill...what grit of paper should i start with? and which grit should I end up with??

Just be sure you aren't going to cut through material wall stock somewhere by completely milling down the ribs. Other than that, you should be okay. The paper you start with will greatly depend on your surface finish after you mill it down. When I did mine, I used a carbide inserted fly cutter which leaves an excellent finsh when run at the right speed and feed. I only had to hit mine with 320 wet and 400 wet before polish.

so take it down little by little and just take enough off to clear the ribs and thats it right....the bits at school really aren't the best so i'm probably gonna have to hit it with some coarse dry stuff first, then work my way up...

did you polish up the whole plenum or just the top? i can't really tell from the pics....if you polished the whole thing, would you have to mill the bumps off the whole thing or what?
