It could actually be black chrome. The look is much like that of a hematite (sp) stone...as far as I know its a similar process to actual chrome!

they do make a paint called black crome. i seen an acura nsx painted with it. it will show any imperfections and is one of the most expensive paints out there. i believe dupont makes it, but dont quote me, i checked into when i painted my 89 iroc black (we were using ppg) and the ppg rep said he had seen but said the **** was 1200 a gallon. compared to 120 for concept 2000 9700 black ppg (really good base coat) a gallon, i said screwit i can spend the money i save on the tt 427. search for a meguire's sponserd nsx, thats were i seen it in there booth couple years back.
thanks

Here is my black chrome dual snorkel.
It's not paint though it's a plating. Pretty pricey to do. It was about $260 just for the plating. Not many shop do it.

Now I do know of a paint that just came out that is like a chrome finish...yes it is prob the most expensive paint known...I thought about doing chrome flames on my dually with it!
I'm stuck with chrome on it from the factory, so I thought why not...might look cool! Just a pint of the stuff may not be too bad!
I have been debating on my dually and Scout which will both be cadillac 500 engined vehicles, about the black chrome plating! Probably will use it on the scout since it will be yellow and black. Dually is chrome and black!
The black chrome powder coating is probably alot like the transparent red powder coating...it will look like chrome if done on a relatively shiney metal piece.
Know that i'm thinking about it there is a company that has released a Mustang replica whell that is done in RED chrome...not sure if plated or powder coated!
Amazing what can be done now...will look for pics of all!

PermaStar™ Wheels
MSI is the first Corvette shop on the West Coast offering PermaStar as a permanent finish on wheels. We offer PermaStar in Standard Chrome finish, as well as Black Chrome. Other custom colors (Red chrome, Green chrome…) can be made available for an additional charge.
We can PermaStar Finish your factory painted wheels for as little as $215/wheel. Chrome factory wheels cost a bit more to strip and shall be quoted on a case by case basis.
PermaStar will not peel or weaken the wheel as many chrome plating processes have been known to do. If you have factory wheels that have been damaged, we may be able to repair them prior to the coating process, making this process very affordable compared to buying new wheels.
PermaStar Chrome is a revolutionary new process developed in the past two years for Road wheel finishes. The process applies a pure chromium coating to the wheel surface and is then powder coated clear. The result is a durable, show quality finish that can withstand some of the most stringent OEM Automobile tests for exterior parts. PermaStar uses no Hazardous chemicals and leaves no hazardous waste for the process.

if you do a search it's been discussed many times, there are even some photoshops of my car in chrome colors. i've been working with it for the last 6 months and while it's priced resonably i'm not sure i'd recommend it fully on a car that is driven on the road. subtle details though it's pretty nice.
