Anybody ever put chrome valve covers on?

I am about to install some chrome valve covers on my 1992 305 TBI. However, I noticed that the passenger-side cover is buried under several hoses...I guess they're for the heater, emissions, or something. Anybody had any luck re-routing these hoses to clean up the engine compartment a little? Any pointers on installation of the covers will be appreciated, too. Check out my web page for pics of the engine compartment and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Sure, just get rid o fall that stuff. Then take your smog pump out and check the tech section for belt routing. That will elimintate alot ofyour hoses. you can shorten the heater hoses that go to the heatercontrol valve and extend theone from the rad and push them back further in the engine comartment. Pretty much aslnog as everything is routed the same you can do whatever you want. Heck you could drive the smog pump with a 5th whell you attach to your bumper as long as everything is routed the same. just have fun with it. and be creative.

Later,
Lars

BTW: Spend the extra money on good valve covers. Don't get cheap thin stuff it will leak. and don't go torque'n the bolts as tightas you can get them.

lars92rs is completely right. In addition to what he said, it might be worth your while to sand the area of the valve cover that is contacting the cylinder head so oil has absolutely no chance of slipping by. Most people who complain of leaks with chrome covers fail to do this (i did too). Driver's side should be a piece of cake though.....

And plan on polishin' the 'ol valve covers pretty often if you drive down any dirty roads. Because on my T/A 6.6, they get dirty!

I can tell you from my expierence, it was a pain in the *** . I changed mine at the same time I redid my intake gasket. I had to pull them out from the sides towards the runners. I couldnt get them off going straight up. I guess if you take all the hoses off you can get to them. Maybe others could do it but I sure couldnt. Anyway I glad with the final results. I got the center bolt valve covers from the Chevy dealer. You can also get them thru Classic Industries and places like that. They are high dollar though. $139.00 for me.

Lars, I have attached an edited photo of my engine just to make sure that we are talking about the same stuff. Would you take a look at this and make sure I understood you correctly? I'd really appreciate it. Any other tips from anyone else on cleaning up the engine compartment will be appreciated, too.

Witchmaster's87 Iroc-

How did you get the plastic peice that connects to your intake to look chrome(the peice that covers your distributer).
Or did you buy a chrome one...

I did this a week ago, and listed a "How to" there but i can't find it. Most of the steps are removing hoses, you have to drain the coolant and detach the heater hose. I had to remove the alternator, because an emissions accessory was in the way. Doesn't really take too long (if u have the right tools ). The emissions vacuum wires may be brittle and will snap like dry spaghetti, but u can replace them with rubber vacuum hose.

Once all the stuff is out of the way, it is very easy. I love the chrome valve covers, and feel that the push-in breather is a major improvement over the stock breather. (carbureted). Next thing to do is get a chrome air cleaner.

I only did this because i got a sweet deal on the valve covers. GM Goodwrench performance product from Jeg's is about $45, i got them for $16, new.

GTAlover,, I think that piece is from a vette,, if I remember correct,, someone said they were aluminum instead of plastic.

I'm sure Wishmaster could tell you for sure tho

Regarding that piece: Corvette ones are aluminum, Camaro/Firebird ones are plastic. You can get a 'Vette one and polish it like that.

Please do not post ".bmp" files. They take too long to download for most people. Convert them to ".jpg" then they are fine.
Thank you.
