To buy them already chromed, it could cost $700-$1,000/set, depending on where you find them. Whereas, to have yours chromed, it'll only cost about $400-$500. So the amount you get from selling yours would determine the cost effectiveness of your choices.
An option over selling yours is that many shops that chrome wheels will take your current ones in exchange, and that could cut your cost by as much as half(your rims plus about $100-$125/rim for their chromed rims--if they have them in stock).
Also available already chromed are your '86 style rims in 18", if you'd been thinking about going larger. Whereas, '89+ IROC rims are only available in 16", not larger. So you've got that advantage over people with later IROCs. But to go with larger rims, then you'd have another cost... new tires. But if you're planning on new tires anyway, then this one won't matter much.
All crystal clear now?

alright sounds good...thats what i needed...i need new tires as well, so i might go with bigger rims also. I'm working on getting some prices for 18's and 20's..i might do 20's all around or a staggered 18/20 setup...
I was just curious on how much chrome plating costs..

I beg to differ - i think by the time you FIND a chromer who can do something big like a wheel, by the time they put the labor into prepping the wheel, shipping them back and forth - i'd bet that it would be cheaper and a hell of a lot less effort to buy them already chromed.
For those who doubt me, which of you has had things chromed, and with WHO...?

to get them plated properly it is much more expensive.. when you buy them plated chances are they are reman or knockoff imitations and the plating isn't usually as nice as it could be, but that's the breaks in getting things cheaper. also, no one in michigan can legally chrome a wheel the proper way, so if your getting prices to do so be informed.

alright thanks for the heads up...I think it would be better to sell the iroc rims i have now, and get like 300 bucks for them, and invest in a new set of wheels. Then i can sell the 4th gen adapters I have along with the 18's i have laying around, and beable to get exactly what I want, which probably will be bigger irocs..

But in defense of your statement, whenever a similar topic came up, there were always a lot of speculative responses, but no one-to-few had actually done it, so most information was just that... speculative. But because I'd SERIOULSY wanted to have this done, I did the homework myself, found the shops, and actually talked to them. So when I finally had the 'extra' cash, I knew exactly what I wanted and where I was going.
So everything I said above is accurate, but I neglected to mention that, yes, prices do vary based on the size of the wheel, larger being more expensive--but not much more. And the prices I 'ballparked' in my above post were 'ballpark' because different places charge different prices.
Specifically, mine were $450/set(for 16"), plus $20/center cap, and that included all the prep work. Shipping would've been additional, but Wheel Concepts, www.wheelconcepts.com was in the LA area, so I delivered and picked them up myself--which was cool because I got to checkout their warehouse.
You can see them in my sig. They really came out GREAT... some of the most satisfying money I've ever spent!

Thanks and LA fire and tpi383
The biggest reason i chimed in is over here on the east coast, i have yet to find anyone that would take a set of wheels i have, prep them and then chrome them!
383 - does CE do chroming?
