strip the paint off of it, use flexible primer on it and repaint it

the rubber wing is a peice of crap. It is extremely heavy and was a terrible idea to manufacture. Throw that dang thing away and get a fiberglass one. You will thank yourself down the road because in less than a year your rubber wing will look the same as it does now if you repair it. I have seen two guys try to repair these things and they did not last at all. Once they crack and warp they are not reusable. just my

My dad just redid the old spoiler on his '86. It looks great (before primer and paint). He fixed the cracks with some kind of super glue and some clamps. It may pop apart again at some point, but it was worth a shot at least. So far, he has $2 and 10 minutes invested and it looks pretty good. And before all you "just go buy a fiberglass one" guys go and bash anybody for their attempts at a repair, why don't we see exactly how his turns out. I wish I had before pics, but I will def. post "after" pics.

Besides, he bought his car for $600. It is definitely a 'fixer-upper', but it is just an 86 T/A ... nothing special. Why would he spend way over half of the car price just on a new spoiler? I figure it's worth a shot at a repair.

LORD do yourself a favor and get a fiberglass aftermarket...THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL and SOOOOOO light...im talking i think i atleast shed 15lbs-20lbs off the rear of the car...every little bit helps...and you nv have to worry bout that nasty cracking that will happen no matter how many times you repair it

soo many guys on here need to stop being cheap...its called saving your money...if youre stuck at mcdonalds, then go look for a better job....noone on this site is gonna obtain an amazing thirdgen or ANY CAR for $15 bucks with a 10 dollar rebate...everyone loves their thirdgen but isnt willing to spend any money on it and want everything for free or close to it and then look at camaroguy18 and kandied91z etc... and drool over there cars and wonder why their cars look like junk compared to others

U can fix the factory spoilers as much as you want.

I dont care how good they look, in time they will crack as bad as or worse than before.

ANything u do to it, doesnt fix the fact that the metal rod running thru it is rusting and swelling.

It sucks, but the only proper repair to make it last involves getting a new aftermarket spoiler.

Ok, so you fix the spoiler now. Down the road you will end up buying an aftermarket one anyways because the one you have now you have fixed so many times it doesn't look like a spoiler anymore. Why not save time and effort and just buy the aftermarket one now?

And no offense gcgarner, but you're going to spend a lot more than the cost that you bought it for. I haven't seen your car and dont know what condition it is in, but you will probably end up paying much more for parts than the car originally cost.

Why you can't repair the rubber spoiler

Alot of guys have been saying to buy the fiberglass spoiler because the rubber one will fail again. Well here is why:

THe factory spoiler is made of a metal frame surrounded in rubber. The metal frame begins to rust and swell. THe rubber around the frame begins to deform and swell also. It cracks...there is rust water running out of the spoiler when it gets wet and oozing down the side and back of your car....

You can make the outside surface look ok with work, but it WILL start bubbling, cracking, and oozing.

I just bought my 2nd $350 spoiler. It also costs around $300 to get the spoiler finished and painted. However, I put a fiberglass spoiler on my mint TTA and it looks incredible.

Seriously, if you're looking for a cheap fix, at least give the glue and clamps a try. My dad's has held up beautifully for 2 months so far in the rain and 100-degree temps.

I know you guys are all about the fiberglass (and rightfully so), but a $3 fix will work on it for at least 2 months ... I guarantee it!!

And then what do you do after those 2 months? Reglueit and hope it works for another 2 months? Or go out and buy a new one like you should have 2 months earlier?

rubber wing

I have also been there, and have patched up the wing on my car 3 times now and but let me ask this

Did you know there is a piece of metal inside the rubber wing that helps give its shape?

And there are metal bolt brackets inside also where the wing bolts to the car?

did you know that the rubber wing splits and starts to fall apart because the metal inside is rusting like crazy.

I didnt know this when I fixed the wing on my car last year. but when I was standing on the go pedal and I had the car's 140mph speedo buried, I looked in my rearview mirror and quickly noticed the wing was gone!!. so of course I went back to look for it and all the while hoping any mustang owners wouldnt catch me picking up the pieces of my wing all over the highway. I knew then that no amount of glue would be able to putt the Ruber wing back to gether again.

so I you have the cash or not , take this warning that if you do patch it up and it looks like new. its still rotting inside more and more as each day goes by. save your self from the embaresment and get the fiberglass wing.
