BOY did I screw up.

I am really embarassed to even post this. I went absolutely BRAIN DEAD tonight and applied Aircraft Surface Remover to the clear center "Camaro" portion of my 91-96 centercaps....yup, all four. Please, dont even ask.

It went down pretty deep, severly melting and pitting the clear plastic. I have been sanding all night with 60 grit and have gotten most of the bad plastic out, there is only a little bit of pitting left which I will try and get at tomorrow. But the ugly part now is that even if I get all the pitting out, I am left with severly sanded and foggy centercaps. I am 90% sure these things are toast, however I'm not going to give up just yet. What do you recomend I do? My plan was to go from 60 grit to 100, then 150, 220, something in the 300 range, maybe 400, then some rubbing compound and finally some polishing compound. Any suggestions?

Dark, plastic is pretty hard to make look good as it did originally when it was molded. IMO, I'd do a search on *baymotors for a new set. IF you still want to spend the time trying to fix yours, the grades you mentioned would do but you'd want to go all the way up to like 1000.

Grr, yeah, I just took another look and these things are goners. I just sanded with 60 grit to take off the white melted plastic and stuck em back on. From 6 feet they look fine. Down the road when I do my wheels I'll replace them. What a tough lesson. WTF was I thinking!

Dude that sucks, but it reminds me of the time the EPA stopped by to yell at us for using too much aircraft soap on our ospreys...so we took the priviledge of washing their truck for them

That sucks...When I was younger a freind of mine and myself used to wash his fathers company vans...We figured Brillo worked so good on the tires we should use it on the van. aVan was black too...Man did we leave some scratches on that thing. My friends dad was not very pleased.

just get a new set on ebay. they're dirt cheap on there, and you can usually find a few nice sets

Ouch..... that sounds like the time my mom used a gallon of nitro methane I had on my workbench because she thought it was windshield washer fluid! They're both blue.... but I'm still not sure how she made that mistake.....

Or as bad as my father deciding to clean his brushes next to my car that had paint thinner on them.

I had just finished painting the nose and front ground effect on my car. Had it sitting on some saw horses in my garage.

Well...after i cleaned my paint gun with reducer. I hung it up in the same place i always do. which just happened to be right over my freshly painted nose.

Came back out a few hours later to see my new shiny nose. The gun still had some reducer from the cleaning. It dripped from the gun and ran down the nose and ground effect. Melted the paint right off it.

you could also look for late model s-10 center caps, they use the same wheels and caps as yours. you might be able to get them a little cheaper that way too.

I think they maybe the same size. I may check this, if the sales people leave me alone long enought to test fit one. Or go under the cover of darkness... Just joking, i know people in the parts department of gm dealership they may can get some measurements for me or let me get some.

You can buy new ones cheap though.

This reminds me of the day i had slammed on brakes to teach a friend who was riding with don't cuss at the driver or back talk for that matter. Anyways got to his house, decided i check and see if i cut into the rotors. So i stuck finger back there feel the rotor. Can we say, "dumb move".:P

Also it was my right hand and I had to ride the bike back with the burnt hand

Haha, that's strange. It actually pitted my mom's windshield a bit. But dang, it sure does foam up. Scary indeed.
