Rain is bad? What?!?!

I read in classifieds all the time, never driven in rain/snow...

I know you can't drive in deep know, but what's wrong with rain? Light Snow?

I can only think of rust, mine being a '92 with no rust I have to drive mine in rain...

What does the salt do to the cars???

guess uve never been to canada, pretty rare to see a car without rust due to salt on the roads. rain is fine but having a car not driven in the weather is way better than a car that has, every time you drive around, your tires spit up all kinds of dirt and water and store it behind fenders which can rot and corrode cars from the inside out. if your car was made of aluminum and stainless steel then there wouldnt be a problem, but since cars are made of steel, we dont stand a chance to the elements.

Water can rust steel. Usually it happens in places where the water can't escape and just sits there...

Go sink a piece of raw steel in water and then set it outside for a couple of days ... repeat several times ... and see what happens. Yes, rain will cause rust. But most of the steel on your car is protected by paint, so the rain isn't terrible.

water will rust a car...but salt water will increase the process up to 10 times in lab tests. salt allows the oxidation of steel to proceed faster, like a catalyst.

Any special wax or coatings that can prevent this?

Any good wax (I just use original Turtle Wax) on your car will protect the finish.

Pay careful attention to the drain holes on the bottoms of your doors. If they get plugged up, rust will follow. I coat the inside bottoms of my doors with oil, and clean and wax the bottom inner edges often. Regularly take a hose and blast the inside edges of the rear wheelwell lips, where dirt and crud collectes and traps water. Wash down the floorpans as best you can, too.

Any bare metal that you have should be painted and protected. Any rust that forms, whether on the body or the floorboards or wherever, needs to be killed immediately. Remove loos paint and rust, soak affected area with Ospho acid, then coat with Master Series paint or body touch up paint, depending on the location.

When i had my RS I used to drive it in the rain because it didnt have T-tops, i wasn't really scared of f-bodies in the rain, and the fact that the underside was spotless. Granted the car was stored in the winter (so it never saw snow), but for the year i had it i drove it in the rain probably 30 or so times and it still didn't have any undercarriage rust (49k miles). Over a long time more might have developed and it might have started to accumulate in hard to reach spots and started to rust.

My Z28 will never intentionally see rain because of what happened to my RS in the rain and the fact that it has t-tops.

Understanding that its your only car and you cant be too selective w/ your driving you should limit the car to rain. And BE CAREFUL in any type of moderate-heavy rain. I lost my first camaro because of that... If you keep driving it in the rain over time surface rust will develop on the undercarriage and maybe even around the wheel wells...just try to buy a beater if you can. And road salt eachs our cars apart...please dont drive that thing in the snow/ice.

Since I'm still in Highschool, I can't pay the insurance on 2 cars...

I'm not going to drive it in snow at all, but the rain is crazy right now...
