New Wheels...any opinions?

I was wondering if anyone had ever thought of putting these type of wheels on your T/A or Camaro?

Corvette Style Wheel

They are 15x8 with a 4" backspace.

Grr...I wish I knew how to just post a picture on this thing...oh well. The link will have to do. Sorry.

Those would definitely be interesting. I think if done right, on a clean car, they'll look good... Actually, I just looked at your car pics and I get a good feeling it'll look sweet. Just get some clear sidemarkers and foglights and it'll look shart........imo

Here are some pictures of the wheels on a Corvette...and an up-close shot of one of the wheels. I've always loved the look...though I hesitate a bit when I think of going away from the gold-wheel look.

Corvette with wheels on it

IMHO, NOTHING beats the GTA crosslace wheels, but...They actually don't look that bad. Hard to Photochop your pic so small, and sitting at such an angle. A larger pic, and straight on, from the side,
I could do better.

With 15"s, your handling will be gone...but you'll get a "cushy" ride!

Someone on here has those, I'll try to see what I can find.
Those wheels were actually on my 2nd gen when I bought it - I think they look cool if the car is made to match

It's only got the original 15's on it now so I wouldn't know what "better handling" feels like anyway. I have a better pic of my car at work that I intend to post on my cardomain also.

By the by...how do you post a pic in the thread like that. All I've been able to do is make the links...

If you could find it, that would be very cool! I've always loved those corvette wheels...I just don't know if 8" will fit under the front without rubbing.

Try sending him a PM and see if he has pics.

Hope that helps.

When you use the "Post Reply" button on the lower left, there is a box for "Additional Option" One of them is "Manage Attachments" That will pop up a window where you can upload a pic.

I actually think it looks pretty cool on your black Bird!
Here ya go...

I was curious...I'll keep my crosslace wheels. The Vette wheels don't have the impact on a white car.

Hehe You're right, they don't. I love the potential look they could have...they do look good on my car...but I love the gold and black look too much I think...so I'll probably end up sticking with my cross lace as well.

I agree with the crosslace ones, but I'm not a huge fan of the gold/bronze. Only black. If I didn't have the black ones, I'd probably would have gotten aftermarket. Maybe you can paint your crosslaces...like this

Hmm, terminology error...I don't have the cross-lace. I have these..

----------
The only problem I have with them...is I can't keep the center caps in the front wheels. I've tried the metal inserts too...but the bearing cap is too wide for the insert "center hole"...there fore I can't put it on properly. /shrug So I've been looking at new wheels. That's my main problem..only reason I'm really even looking at new wheels.

Those are pretty gold all right. Perhaps you could just repaint them in a different manner, like a polished lip? A different shade of gold? I wonder why your center caps won't stay on? Worst case, I suppose you could get a tube a clear silicone, and apply it to the inner section of the wheels, where the cap sits, not outside the cap o course. Once it dries, the caps SHOULD stay on, but easily pulled off when needed.

That's one reason I didn't pass up the second set I found, for a good price. Not to mention, the tires on them, are perfectly good!

Yeah, but then it's another $500.00 for tires. hehe I think I'll try the clear silicon for now to see if that works. The problem I have is that the teeth on the caps doesn't properly grip the wheel center...and the metal inserts though the grip right, are the wrong size to fit over the wheel bearing cap. /shrug Poorly designed if you ask me.

Hmmm...I've had 2 sets, on 2 cars, and never lost a center cap. They were all the 16" crosslace wheels though. Maybe the 15"s are a little different.

As for the tires, you can get good ones for around $75-$80 each. $300-$320/set

I don't know...it suprised me when I lost the first one..I was like "Where did it go?"...then "Why?"....and when I started looking I didn't like what i saw. It's almost as if the center part of the wheel is worn out a...kind of like a machine screw in a hole that's just a bit too big. It holds "ok"...but if you put any pressure on it, it'll slip right out. Like when your driving down the road...

The stock crosslace wheels are 16"x8", so they'll fit, depending on the backspacing.

Well, here's to assuming if you buy "Stock" it will fit. They should come with the backspacing requird to work as it were "Stock" right?

all crosslaces fit all 82-92 f-bodies. "stock" im told u could even get all fronts 4 a better look.. so there all interchangable.

:Stock" is a vehicle specific though, as well as front and rear, sometimes. The crosslace wheels, have different backspacing, front to rear. The fronts will fit the rear, but the rears won't fit the front very well. You can bolt them up, and the car will roll, but the first hard turn, and they will hit.

When we had my wife's car repainted, they had the wheels switched, because we had them paint the centers yello, to match her stripes.

Pulled it outta the detail area, SCRAAAAPE!!! "OK guys, you got the wheels switched!"

That's the reason I got the other set. Now I have 4 extra rear ones. At least I have 4 extra tires!

Due to the nature of tire rotation...I would want to get a set that could interchange between front and rear. But, I think I will live with mine for now and work on some other stuff...like maybe getting a set of 4th gen seats to put in. ) ANd I need new inner door panels. Ahh the life of an old car.

That's another reason for my 4 front wheels. Now, all 4 will fit any position. Besides, stock, the rear wheels have a shallower dish. It just looks wrong, having deeper dishes on the front anyways.

Sorry, no pics.

To be honest, I haven't swapped them yet. I can't physically do that. If I so much as get a flat, or blow a tire, I'm screwed, until a stranger will do it for me.

Fronts - 4.75" bs
Rears - 5.25" bs

So, the rears will only sit out another 1/2", and fit fine. A lot of people (GTA owners included) don't even realize they are different...until they hafta change them out, and wonder what the hitting is from on the front, when they get them wrong. It makes no sense that GM did that anyways. It would have been cheaper, to just have one run, not two.

Check GTA Source Page I think there are a few guys on there that have done the swap.

Injured? Permanently. Hope you didn't eat lunch...

Aug. 28, 2004. T-boned, my wife was killed in the wreck, my 2.5 yr old daughter was tightly strapped in, only a broken collar bone, and a couple of cracked ribs. We were both thrown out of the car. The Fire Dept. were so focused on our bodies on the road, they didn't realize my daughter was in the car, until they heard her screaming. Thankfully, I put the car seat in the center. The side of the body stopped MAYBE 1" away from her car seat.

I was comatose for a month, spent 7 months in the hospital, 4 months at home waiting for a live-in rehab place, 7 months in there, and FINALLY got back in the real world, January '06. Because of the massive head injury, I had to go to TX DPS (MAB....the Medical Advisory Board)and take another driving test. I now walk like I'm drunk 24/7, have a REAL bad voice. Can't even be understood on the phone. And my left arm and leg barely work, or have any strength. I had to buy a car to find out out if I could drive, because I kept getting offers to let me try (I had no doubt), but that's all they were...offers. Nobody followed through. I got my GTA in May of last year, so I haven't even been driving again for a full year yet.

So, I get people looking at me when I pull my GTA into a handicapped spot. It's obvious by their stares they think I'm using my parents or grandparents tag. I refuse to run the handicapped plates, and only hang my tag up, after I park. Besides, "technically" the tags are illegal to drive with, hanging from the mirror. It's considered a visual obstruction.

I know...Depressing story.

I've learned though...

If I got ONE person to center the car seat, the telling was worth it. Hell, I'm going 6 pt street/low door bar cage in my GTA. I could care less if my arm hits the bar, and gets broken. At least his bumper will still be OUTSIDE my car!

Ouch. Dodge vs. VW....I'm really sorry to hear that man. I will definitely put our car seat in the middle also. As Bandit said...best of luck with everything. I just showed my wife...scared her to death also...our thoughts and prayers are with ya.

Thanks guys.

If you notice in the pics, at 2.5 yr old, she was already in a booster seat (I'm 6'5", my wife was 5'10") she'll be tall for sure. My daughter is now 5yrs 3months old, and back in a 5 pt child safety seat! She's way past the point of legally HAVING to be in a seat, but you know what? Until she physically cannon fit in one, she'll be in one, even if she is 7yrs old, and in first grade (she starts Kindergarden in September!)...or was it Pre-K, I forget...Brain injuries SUCK!!!

I feel like I hijacked this thread...

I took these pics, to show the difference in the dish, front to rear wheels. Since you are increasing the track width by 1" (.5" out on each one..."Wider is Better" lol), I suppose it should handle "better", but I doubt you'd notice any difference.

To me it makes no sense to have a deeper dish in front...you'd want the wider tires on the back for traction wouldn't you? Yes..wider tires in front would help with handling a bit but not enough to make a difference I don't think.

Oh, and I don't think you hijacked the thread...we were pretty much finished weren't we?

Well, all 4 are 16" x 8", just different backspacing, but to me, that makes the rears look narrower.

I'm thinking now though...if you used the stock style spacers (4mm, IIRC), and used them on the front, you could switch the wheels, front to rear and rear to front. I've got a pair of brand new, still in the package, spacers. I might try that. Then I wouldn't need the extra set of wheels. If that worked, you could still run the different wheels, but , any wheel could fit in any spot! What I really want though is, a set of the 87 only crosslace wheels, since mine is a 87.

Geez! I wanna go outside right now and try that! It's nice and warm here, despite raining most of the day.
