Best colour for a 3rd gen?
Hi everyone im going to rebuild my 84 T.A over a fue years and am looking in to all my options one of the jobs will be a full repaint (Back to bare metal) but i want to know what is the BEST colour to make a 3rd gens body line stand out. I realy like the style and shape of the 3rd gens and i want it to look its best.
If people have pictures of there or other 3rd gens and they think the paint realy makes the car stand out please post them, I like the Dark Metalic Blue with Silver GFX but i have only ever seen that on a camaro not a T.A.

Re: Best colour for a 3rd gen?
the only colors i think make the trans am is black ( obviously ) white, charcoal and a dark silver, if u want to go with red stay with a dark shade of red ... dont get chevelle stripes or paint the gfx different, stay with a solid color

Re: Best colour for a 3rd gen?
I kinda agree with Tsibouky stay with the normal colors. The body style has a nice shape and takes most colors very well. I've had two T/A's of charcoal and silver and another black. One was silver over charcoal, current is vice versa. The brighter colors seem to have been attached to the lower model V-6 cars, Pontiacs anyway, can't say much about the Camaros. Paint your car the color you want it to be, you gotta pay for it, you gotta drive it.
In the early to mid 80's there was an IROC medium blue that I thought was the most beautiful color ever. At the time I painted my '76 Vette that color but it didn't suit the car, the body shape wasn't right. Look at other T/A's out there, You'll find the color you want.

Re: Best colour for a 3rd gen?
ATM the car is a dark metalic silver with black GFX and that suits the style but it is very weather beaten and there millions of hairline cracks over 40% of the car you can tell just by looking at it that it was a cheap job. (it looks GREAT at night, when wet or from about 5m away).
The main reason i made this thread was to see pictures of what other people have done so i can make a choice on what id like my car to be.
The main colours i like are Dark Grey/Charcoal, Dark Blue, Dark Red, Black and silver (only on GFX!) But if someone could show me a colour or combo that looks better on these cars id like to see it.

Black
Pain in the rear to keep up with it...but when its clean....

The other color I always liked is a Gunmetal grey metallic. Of course there are a bunch of colors taht look good. Sunset Orange Metallic was always a favorite of mine too... But it all depends on the car. one car painted SOM might look great...another one with different wheels might not look as good. Paint will make or break a car sometimes...

Re: Best colour for a 3rd gen?
Once you go black you never go back. I have two Thirdgens in black. The compliments are endless. As long as the clear coat is solid it is the best color. I like Gun metal on the Trans Am and the silver as well. some reds look good as long as they are not faded. The medium blue that came out in the mid 80's is nice if the paint is fresh. White with stripes is nice but I don't like just plain white with nothing to berak it up. I hate the teal.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say WHITE. A clean, white 85-90 TA is the cat's pajamas as far as I am concerned.

I'm really starting to dig my burgundy... black is also awesome, but an absolute nightmare to keep clean.
Re: Best colour for a 3rd gen?
Black is always sexy, but if your a youngster then you can afford to go for a wilder color and show it off a little. Hope you post your pics when you are done.

Re: Best colour for a 3rd gen?
Bright Red looks awesome on the cars without ground effects. I think the poster that mentioned the V6's and small V8's being red was right on.
My car is red, and it WAS a small v8, with pretty tame components. Now, it looks exactly the same as it did, but it's got a TPI 350, 3.27 posi, 4 wheel discs, WS-6 suspension rebuilt with all poly bushings, and a digital dash; all out of an '87 GTA. The car's in the final stages of completion for the mechanical work, and I should be driving it in about a week.
I'm going to love letting people think it's a "small" V8 when I pull up to the light. I've even got a muffler on it that flows great, but has a very stock sound to it at idle.

For cars with GFX, I'd say the maroon metallic was the best color. That's the color my parts car was, and before it was wrecked, it was a gorgeous machine.

Definetly go with Gunmetal Metalic or Charcoal. My red 90' Bird looked okay, but I like my 91' Bird much better.
EDIT: I have removed the front license plate from my bumper. I know someone will say something about that.

Re: Best colour for a 3rd gen?
Blue with silver ground effects does look quite good, although I love my black, and when it eventually gets repainted (clearcoat peeling), It'll be black, with the same red and silver pinstripe it has. That being said, I just noticed I have no good pictures that show the pinstripe well.

Re: Best colour for a 3rd gen?
With cars as good looking as thirdgens... it doesnt realy mater all that much.
I dont like white or yellow or green. But something about white on the right car looks fantastic. I think white looks good on really clean cars like mw66nova's RS and some formulas...
Other than that.. not a big fan of white in general.
The factory maroon red is gorgeous, so is the factory blue (quasar blue metallic?), and somethinga bout a thirdgen in black is the meanest looking car you've ever seen.
That sunset red metallic orangey color looks super cool too...
Most of them look really good. I just hate that damn green, I see way too many green RS'es around here and they just irritate me. The bright red isnt a favorite of mine, but that's the color my car is.
But red is faster, right?

I had a custom sport bike that was candy burgundy. Custom paint might look just as sick on her. My bike won several best of show titles because of the paint.

Re: Best colour for a 3rd gen?
Thanks for the replys, i see 70% of them are for the darker colours 20% red and 10% other.
Altho there are not many Trans-Ams over here I think 4 out of 5 are red so i think i will go a different direction to that, But i do like the look of it.

Re: Best colour for a 3rd gen?
Being in Australia, I'd say you probably rarely (or never!) see other TAs at random.
If you REALLY want different, go yellow! IIRC, 92 was the only year yellow was offered, and even then, there weren't many made.
