what makes it a TA?
what makes it a TA?
In 1991 I bought a base model 91 white firebird that had 15" gold crosslace rims and gold firebird decals on the side behind the door- it had a tan interior...just about two weeks ago I just bought a 91 white TA- It originally came with 16" charcoal rims and a grey interior and has the black bird decal. What other decals etc came on a 1991 TA to make it a TA... because other than the rim size I can't tell the diff and I want to make it look like it was originally and I can't really tell much diff between the TA and my old base model that they apparently gave the fake "GTA package" to?
if that's not too confusing then I would appreciate some help thanks!

Re: what makes it a TA?
Tail lights were different. T/A had 2-piece (much better looking).
T/A should have ground effects and Trans Am vinyl decals. Base Firebirds had ground effects, too ... but without the decals. Formys had no ground effects.
T/A will have Trans Am dash pouch.
16" crosslace rims are much deeper dish than base Firebird's 15" crosslace (and front is deeper than rear).
Is your base a V6 or V8? If it's a V8 then it's TBI. The Trans Am is probably TPI, but it could be TBI also, I think.
Does the Trans Am have GTA-style seats? Some did. What about WS6 suspension? These are all options that could have come with the T/A but not with the base model.
Anybody got anything else to add?

Yes I has two tail lights - but one is from a diff car and the PON letters are a bit lighter than the other side which is not all that great- looking for a replacement one day. My base was a V6 and this one is a V8 of course with TPI. They both had ground effects but I am not sure what "extra Trans Am vinyl decals" my TA should have so anyone who can please let me know. My dash pouch is not a side entry one and all it has is the bird logo. Not sure if that is the right one or not. And it does say near the pouch "performance suspension" in a seemingly stick on type decal. The seats look regular not curved like the GTA style and WS6 suspension- not sure unless that sticker means it has it. thanks for your help. Let me know on the decals and pouch and anything else anyone can think of.

Re: what makes it a TA?
I looked at my T/A today and my dash pouch only has the bird, too. I was mistaken on that. Do you have your RPO sheet? It's usually in the center console. It will say WS6 if it is WS6. That "Performance Suspension" emblem probably means that it is WS6 ... mine has that, too. But mine also has WS6 wheel center caps.
The decals consist of a small nose bird, TRANS AM on both door ground effects in about 3" outlined letters, and a small TRANS AM of the same font on the rear bumper on the passenger side. Your should have two sail birds, too. Mine doesn't of course because it's a vert. You should be able to do a search on here or Google for 91 or 92 Trans Am and see the decals clearly. You can order them from hawksthirdgenparts.com.
As far as the PON and TIAC letters go, you can either order new vinyl stickers or just peel them off. The cars don't look bad without them.

But just to clarify, not all base models had GFX. Re: what makes it a TA?
thanks- when I peel off the letters will it be noticable - will you be able to see where they once were and how easy is it to do? Thanks for the decal info- I am missing the trans am words on the bumper and the bird on the nose but other than that I think I am good to go.

Re: what makes it a TA?
Another thing that hasn't been mentioned is that the Formula, GTA, and Trans Am all got an upgraded wing that the base didn't get. MUCH better looking.
You might want to look at your taillights to see if either side is original. The 91-92 Trans Am/GTA taillights were completely different from other years and more than just the lettering would be WAY off on one side..

T/As have the side vents on the front fenders just behind the front wheels. None of the other models did.

Re: what makes it a TA?
I have a 91 TA and have been trying to find out how I can revive the PONTIAC lettering on the tail light lenses. Mine were painted on and have faded away over the years.
You mentioned "stickers" in your reply in this thread. Do you know where can I find them?

Re: what makes it a TA?
On the base firebird the groung effects were optional.
The ws6 was an option on the TA in 91 as it came standard with a level II turing suspension....I believe
