lets learn about car photography :)

ok guys...i just checked out the thread for wall paper pictures....some had some nice work!...a few are...well...dont wanna say the word ...there is some awesome looking cars on this site...so why not showcase what we have to offer to the rest of the world...one thing that annoys me is reflection or glare off a windshield!...it wrecks the picture!!...there is a way to correct this...its called a circular polarizer..this lil guy will take the reflection right out...its a very useful tool when it comes to glare....

if you look at the glass and the paint you can see it has hardly any reflection at all...and with the car being black...its a pain in the ***!!!.....part of the issue in reflection lays in the time of day you shoot the car....just before the sun going down or coming up is the best time....noon is the wrong time....it will over expose any picture....this car can't be shot during that time of the day because it will glare like a damn mirror....like this.....this is actually the same car...heh

another thing we mess up on is the location...pictures on grass is not good for pics...the one above is a car show pic...nothing id show off as to say...look at my ride...location is the key to making the car pop in the picture...if you have your car sitting in the back of a house and sitting next to other cars...its distracting.....you want the car to be the subject...

the background for this works great...older looking and the car pops out...

another thing that is a major issue that makes and breaks a picture or being over exposed of under exposed...if you are going to take a picture of a car with a back lit sky....the car or front of the picture is going to be dark...thats bad!...i know we all can't afford a 1500 dollar dslr and combat this issue but just knowing what does it helps with future pictures..certain color cars like white cars and sun do not work....they will over expose badly and you get a white blob in a picture....this is another color that can't be done when the sun is at full attack!

any other photographers in here?.....the above pics were not taken with my canon 20d dslr...they were done with a cp filter and a canon a610 and a lil bit of photoshop

Re: lets learn about car photography :)

Well...I see flaws with all 3 pics.

In the first one, be aware of what reflects in the windshield...Like those black lines from (apparently) overhead power lines.

Second one...Well, yeah, it was just shown as as an example of what NOT to do, so.....

Third pic....You've got some windshield reflection going on again. And the lighting coulda been better. The lighting was from the wrong angle, effectively not showing much detail of the side of the car you taking a picture of.

as for reflection in that pic....id like for you to explain how to exactly get it 100% glare/reflection free......that is WITH a cp filter...granted it still has some glare, you can't get rid of all of it....if the filter wasn't used you would see nothing inside that car

the bottom wasn't talking about lighting...the bottom was talking about location...thats all thats about..if this was done with my current equipment and not a point and shoot 4 years ago...it would be alot better...

you can also see the paragraph below it talking about under exposure...these pictures were posted as a guide...not an all out magazine quality picture...youre digging a lil deeper into these then you should have...they are examples and good ones

Re: lets learn about car photography :)

I'd be very interested in crits on this picture:

I have a few shots that are basically the same, with some minor differences (sunny/cloud covering sun, flash/no flash, etc). This seems to be the one that fits the bill. btw, it was taken between 12:00 - 2:00 pm.

it could use some sharpening cuz it seems a tad bit soft but not so bad...the time you took it is when the sun is overhead, you wanna aim for an hour or two before sunset or on a hazy day...direct sunlight is bad!

Whats a circular polarizer? and I photoshop a lil what settings do you normally mess with
a cp filter is a filter you can buy for the threads on the end of the lens...it turns in a full 360degree rotation and will take away glare as you turn it....it will also help with colors and saturate a blue sky alot nicer...its a must have if you own a dslr!..

the settings i play with are pretty much everything in the edit and filter menu...im still learning alot...awesome thing to learn

the color thing is funny...red is a bad one for that, it looks orange...that would have to do alot with how the camera is...ive noticed some blues look weird too.....lets see some of your pics...you need to develop and idea and go from there....everyone has their own style

Besides the obvious reflection what else is wrong with this picture?
And can photoshop fix the reflection problem?

this is what is referred to as underexposed...you can lighten it up with photoshop and possibly fix it...as for the reflection on the windsheild is a little bit of a pain to fix...thats why i always use a cp filter...does wonders!

Re: lets learn about car photography :)

It takes another vehicle. You have to be in another vehicle traveling the same speed and snap the picture with a shutter speed low enough to blur the surrounding scenery.

You could technically do it stationary and panning the camera if your good but it would be tough to get the right angles for shot just like that.

1/60 for a shutter speed and a wide aperture...shoot in a raw format and have fun with the post processing

Re: lets learn about car photography :)

I'm no photographer, but I think the aperture has a lot to do with any shot. I always love the pics where the car is a sharp clear image and the background has a bit of a blur to it so your focus is naturally drawn to the clearer image. I always figured the aperture was used for this, but I have not taken enough pics yet to determine the distance at which that will make a difference. I.E. if the car is 10-20 feet from me and I set the aperture to X amount, the background will be visible enough to tell what everything is while the car is clear, but if the car is only 5-10 feet away, I can set the aperture to X and the same will happen. I know the camera does some correcting as well. That could also be a focus issue that I am running into.

Here's an exaple of what I am talking about. The timing cover is clear, but everything else in the garage is blurred to bring focus to the object being photographed.

In your example shown it looks as if it was done in photoshop. The rest of the image has a motion blur and not just out of focus. Its kinds of impossible to give 1/2 or a still object motion blur in camera.

In basic terms set your appature to the lowest possible number. Your "focal plane" is the area of the image that is in focus. The lower apature number you have, the less that is in focus. Anything above about 4.0 wont give you much of your desired effect. Im not sure how low point and shoot cameras can go. SLR cameras can go as low as the lens you want to buy.

Re: lets learn about car photography :)

i'll explain what youre confused in....the picture you used is just motion shake ...look at the valve covers...he/she must have been in low light and wasn't still during the shot....now using a wide or large aperture...the larger the aperture...the more blur or bokah (its the blurred backgtound) youre going to get...i have some pics of a american kestral on my website that i shot at F4 and everything is blurred in the back of the focused area...refer to pic below:

now say if i used a aperture of F16...youd be able to see a fence and cars behind it...the smaller the number on the lens for aperture the more light the lens will allow in....the larger the number the less light youre getting in through the diaphragm...

Well, I guess I need to practice my camera shake vs. object being photographed ratio to get the pictures I want. I know that effect can be done in photoshop. I must have had the shutter speed so low to get enough light that I was getting that bit of blur. Thanks for the info though.
