Engine bay paint?

Ok, so within this next month, I am going to be putting my new motor in. While the motor is out I was thinking of painting the engine bay. I dont have a garage to work in, and I was wondering the best way to do this and to still have it look good. My plans are to do it flat black.

Re: Engine bay paint?

Something cheap and fast? degrease the bay using what ever you thinks going to work best I.E degreaser, carb cleaner, soup water or a combination of all of them, then blow out what watter or cleaner you can and whip the bay down. Your going to want to scuff up the bay so use about 220 grit sand paper after you scuff everything up blow out what you just sanded and use a paint prep to remove any left over grease or particles, then primmer, sometimes youll be left with some over spray so use a tack cloth and go over the bay lighty, then paint - this should give you a decent looking bay and its defiantly on the cheap and fast side

Re: Engine bay paint?

What color is the car and the current engine bay and what type engine are you installing (rebuilt original, crate, racing, etc.)? Flat black might be good, but I think color works well unless your plans are for the track. Anyway, prep of the existing paint is the key after all those years. Take some extra time getting the old oil and grease off (especially in tight spaces), prep sand like "FueledSoul" suggests, and you will end up with something that will last and not be very expensive.

Re: Engine bay paint?

Can you lay down smooth and even coats with a can of spray paint? you can practice feathering to a degree with a rattle can if you can do that the only real hard part to a paint gun is setting it up and even thats pretty simple.
you also have to realize its just a engine bay its not like its the exterior. If you stick with your organelle plan i think thats more what you where looking for anyway? i think you'll still be happy with the end results

That paint job was very clean! I can never attain this paint job quality all by myself. I use to have my uncle by my side doing the this thing.

Re: Engine bay paint?

I'm a fan of por-15 no need for spray althoguht it would turn out nicer and no worries about rust. Fueled souls is straight beautiful but like u said i don't have that ablitiy. I'm also not sure what color i want the outside to be so i'm doing black so it won't matter. Every inch of my car that thats not going to be the final color is getting painted with por 15. But i'm rust paranoid (ohio snow belt and the prevoius owner stored it outside for the past 2 years). If your not worried about rust, just prep the hell out of it, smooth, etching primer, and flat black of your choice.
