Found a Way to Get Rid of Set in Dirt!

Post your best solutions for massively dirty interiors.

Previously the scouring pad cleaning method, i removed because it not only doesn't work but it ruined my console.

I used fast orange, it worked great, not a whole lot of effort either.

Carefull with the pot scrubber... They work great for knocking off the raised plastic around deep scratches, and polishing out scuffs, etc. But if you're too rough with it, you can scrub the texture pattern right out of the plastic.

Simple Green does a pretty good job cutting the years of soil and greasy fingerprints.

Re: Found a Way to Get Rid of Set in Dirt!

thats why I like the fast orange, it's for cleaning greasy oily hands, most of what is on armrests is stuff transferred from greasy oily hands, and the pumice works it's way down into the texture without rubbing it off.

Armor-All did a very good job and getting the grease out and it also protects it.
I havent ever heard of fast orange.
And i didn't know that simply green would work for that!
Good Insight.

fast orange, GO-Jo, orange goop, it's all the same, some doesn't have pumice though.

Re: Found a Way to Get Rid of Set in Dirt!

Using a scouring pad?? You could have used just water with that and gotten the same results. The Armor All did nothing for you except keep the armrest wet. If you remove the Armor All, you'll probably see that you scratched the heck out of the vinyl and faded it's original finish. The Armor All is just giving it an artificial shine that looks bad to begin with. Simple Green is the best option for cleaning because it's not harsh on the plastics and vinyl. I'd be curious to see what they look like without the Armor All on them now.

Re: Found a Way to Get Rid of Set in Dirt!

over the years i have used many different methods for embossed plastics . what i now use is a dish washer brush with a good cleaner . the brush with fiber bristles ( not nylon ) , the cleaner , purple power , form. 88 , 409 , etc. . after clean , clean & scrub again several times with clear water . remove all of the cleaner & let dry . then treat with a protectant like armorall or whatever you prefer . seems to work for me . good luck .

Re: Found a Way to Get Rid of Set in Dirt!

I've used Marine Clean from the POR-15 company. Dilute it in water and it works great. a 1:3 mix, or 1:2 mix works well. It is safe enough to use on all the plastics and most seat fabrics. It even works on the carpets.

Also going to chime in and give the thumbs up for Simple Green. safe to use on almost everything and gets the job done. I've used toothbrushes before to get into the hard to reach places or the really caked on areas to break things up.

I've found Marine Clean works better. I've tried Simple Green, and there were some things it just wouldn't take out. Marine Clean got the dirt out and did so with even less effort.

Re: Found a Way to Get Rid of Set in Dirt!

Like I said, I like fast orange the best for it, because it's made for getting that kind of mess off of your hands, and if does it very well, esp if you use the kind with the pumice just don't force the pumice into the vinyl, and it will work all of the dirt out,

simple green works well too, but you have to scrub more with it as opposed to the fast orange

Re: Found a Way to Get Rid of Set in Dirt!

i have always called armor-all tire acid. It makes tires dry rot and crack faster. i wouldnt use it to save my life. And it doesnt last that long to begin with. At least not very long when you live in a place that salts the crap out of the roads during the winter.

Tuff Stuff carpet cleaner. $2.99 at Wal-Mart. Gets almost anything out of almost everything, including plastic interior pieces, with little to no effort.

Re: Found a Way to Get Rid of Set in Dirt!

I have awful news everyone.
Well after my last post on this thread i didn't check the thread.
So i disassembled the console to clean and repair.
So i brought out the old scouring pad

HEED MY WARNING, DO NOT EVER, EVER, EVER USE A SCOURING PAD, THE SENIOR MEMBERS AND THE MODERATORS WERE SPOT ON! I SCOURED THE CLEAR COAT OFF MY CONSOLE LID. FML. IT LOOKS INDESCRIBABLY AWFUL.
DO NOT LISTEN TO MY ADVICE, I WAS WRONG DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID. IT DID CLEAN THE ARMRESTS UP NICE BUT I'M GOING TO USE A SPONGE OR SOMETHING NEXT TIME.

AGAIN.

*****DO NOT EVER IN YOUR ENTIRE LIFE USE A SCOURING PAD ON YOUR INTERIOR UNLESS YOUR PREPARED TO POSSIBLY RUIN WHATEVER YOUR CLEANING.*****

Lysol works great with some hot water and a microfiber towel. Comet works great but will take the paint off, its perfect if you are planning on repainting your console pieces.

Re: Found a Way to Get Rid of Set in Dirt!

GUYS im NOT kidding about the mr. clean magic erasers! It is minimal effort at all and they work amazingly. All you have to do is wipe it down with the eraser, dry it off, then put some meguires interior detailer on it to condition it and its ready for a show. really believe me it takes NO effort at all. you dont even have to press hardly at all. I went out and took some pics just to show you how good they work, my inside looks brand new again. this is an all original interior btw.

Re: Found a Way to Get Rid of Set in Dirt!

The eraser idea sounds interesting. I'll try it in spring. Lately I used hot water & Dawn dish soap with the micro rags to wash//dry. I've heard (but never seen) that ArmorAll dries vinyl & plastic. Any one heard of this?
After cleaning, I would wipe every thing down with VooDoo Ride MoJo.
Smells good & freshly clean without a blinding glare.

Re: Found a Way to Get Rid of Set in Dirt!

I've had great luck with them on other things like walls. They seem to be gentler on things than typical scrubbing. they do wear away somewhat quickly, but worth it.
409, simple green, armorall cleaner, etc works good, never tried the marine cleaner. . orange this and that; a caution, i've seen it dull clear plastics. like say your cover over your gauges. or microwave displays. it does it as if its a scouring pad.
