What do you guys think about Stage 1 paint?

I was talking to someone to paint the car and I told him all I wanted was to get the dents pulled out and get a nice new coat of Bright Red paint with a good layer of clear on it.

He asked me how often the car was outside and I replied all the time.

He told me that it would be a better idea to get Stage 1 paint because it would hold up better against the elements.

Well the clear coat on my car is completely done, so I'm open to the idea of a Stage 1 paint job if it will hold up better and give it a fresh look, it really needs a paint job bad...

But what do you guys think about Stage 1 versus Primer/Paint/Clear?

Thanks again.

What are you talking about? Single Stage?

I own a Body Shop and have never heard of Stage 1 paint. If your shop was refering to single stage paint, I wouldnt consider it more durable then base/clear.

Need more info.

I was told by a guy in a paint shop that "Stage 1 Paint" would be better for my car so I'm not even completely sure.....

Re: What do you guys think about Stage 1 paint?

I would just ask him... "is that a single stage or base/clear"?

Go from there. Single stage wont be as much of an expense, but you will be happier with the final result of base/clear.

Could you provide some links or pics of your cars paint job?

I think this is what hes talking about, keeping it waxed wont be a problem I love to detail my car.

Thanks again, she looks great. But when you hit the curb with the bumper is that what happens with this type of paint? And is the car waxed in these pictures or is that just the straight up paint?

I've been wanting to get something forged so that I could have a metal bracket lining the inside of the bumper so it wouldn't flex as much when stuff like that happens.

If I get this paint I'll definately be beefing up the bumper.

Re: What do you guys think about Stage 1 paint?

I used single stage when I painted my car as well (almost 10 years now).....as long as it's done right, there is nothing wrong with single stage. I blocked the **** outta mine....and buffed it....looks just as good as any clear job. I do have to say though, single stage paint takes more care then a base/clear job. I polish mine constantly..to keep the "luster" up...plus, it's in the garage most of the time, not exposed to sunlight, rain etc. BUT, next time I paint it, it's getting 2 stage....just because it's easier to work with and hold up better.

Also, buffing single stage is pretty rough....especially if it's dryed for along time. Base/clear buffs fairly easy (depending on what clear also).

Anyhow, sounds like that guy has a few things mixed up.

Do you have any pics of your car? I want to research this a bit before I dump like a grand in paint, but I just got a scholarship today for college worth a grand every semester, so as far as I see it, that just means that now I have a grand to spend on my car every semester

Re: What do you guys think about Stage 1 paint?

Modern single stage urethane paints are very durable. Whether they are AS durable as a 2 stage basecoat/clearcoat I have no idea, but for a budget paint job, they are very good. My truck is a single stage paint, and it's been like 2 years since I've even washed it. It still looks ok, and if I were to polish it properly, it would still look new.

The one thing you lose with single stage paint is the "depth" that you get with a high quality 2 stage paint.

It still shines a lot nicer than what my car ever did, and it does look pretty damn good, I think I'm gonna go with this instead of a 2 state paint.

Thanks and nice ride!

Budget is what I'm going to have to do, and from the looks of the pictures that I've seen in here I'm won't mind going with a Stage 1 Paint job. Time to start saving and find some good paint and a good painter.

I want to restore my car so bad, this summer if I can its getting paint, and I want to redo the interior as well, then it will be just a good as it was when it was new, well plus 70,000 miles lol

Thanks again guys, I really appreciate it.

Will do, all it really needs is a new headliner, 2 rips in the drivers seat fixed, and like a new dash pad and its good.

I sent you a friend request on CarDomain.

Man, sickness91Z28 that is the cleanest single stage paint job I've ever seen. Looks like a Stage 2 paint.
