need advice on painting hood stripes
I'm eventually going to paint my car BC/CC and buy real heritage stripes for the hood and hatch, but first I need to finish the Impala that I link to in my siggy, and that might be a couple of years off.
In the meantime, I thought I would take a wack at painting stripes on the hood myself, just to see how good I can get them.
Can somebody give me the best steps for creating a template and masking off the stripes, including the pin stripes? Is it best to use paint for the large area, and then traditional bought pinstripes for the thiiner part?
What material should I use for the reversable template?
here's the concept I'm going for..

Re: need advice on painting hood stripes
I did a template using an actual heritage stripe, and I think the curves are too complicated for me to duplicate exactly on both sides without driving into madness, so I'm going to angle one of the side with sharper lines to make the whole job easier, and also make it not a heritage rip off
here's the original and my alteration

curved shapes are not hard to duplicate, just make one out of a large sheet of paper, position it on the hood, tape or mark around the paper, then flip it to the other side of the hood, measure, position and repeat.

Re: need advice on painting hood stripes
you'll find its not all that difficult to do, just takes time to get everything exactly centered and where you want it. as far as what you asked about painting and either paint or pinstripe, what you could do Is lay out the shape at full size, bigger than the pinstiped edge, then actually lay down pinstripe before you paint, then when you remove the pinstripe after its painted you'll have the pinstripe look because the pinstripe will have covered your paint when you painted, giving you the same look your after, its easier than trying to mask off for that thin line. and will be symetrical and spaced evenly all the way around.
Re: need advice on painting hood stripes
Have your local vinyl sign shop cut you a set in whatever color you want. Or you could have them make you a mask so you can paint them on.

Re: need advice on painting hood stripes
one more question... I'm having second thoughts about the Heritage rip- off thing, and I'm thinking of going with a more angular, original idea (at least original in that I've never seen one)
give me your opinions on these 4 stripe designs
first one (heritage style with the curved outset, sorry about the bad photoshop job)

second: irregular pentagon

third: trapezoid

forth: irregular hexagon:

let me know if any of these make you go
"hmmmm.. that's kind of cool..."
thanks!

Re: need advice on painting hood stripes
I'm leaning towards #3 or the standard Heritage version (w/ curves) but I'm thrown my the flat hood. Any thoughts of adding louvers or anything like that?

Re: need advice on painting hood stripes
no not really... It's an RS, and I really don't want to get into the whole clone wanna be thing. I don't mind dressing it up, but louvers are a iroc/Z28 thing
thanks for the opinion. I'm going to redo the photoshop on #3, trying to get the center lines parallel.

I'll do the deck lid but not the roof...
Just got to wait for a nice weather day I can get over to my Dad's house. He's got all the equipment from when I painted his impala. I'm sure I'll get it done sometime in the next month. It's Texas, it can't stay cold forever. LOL

The way it's going I'm not so sure about that! LOL! I thought it was supposed to be warmer in Texas than it has been!
Wish you all were a little closer - I'm having a hell of time finding a paint shop out here that will do the whole car... Everyone down here only want to do "collision" jobs... I would think they'd be happy for the business!

Re: need advice on painting hood stripes
LOL! The thought has crossed my mind!
My problem is that we've got a small 2 car garage and only very basic tools... And I've never done any type of body work before - I'd be too nervous I'd screw something up BIG time...

you could always have somenody else do the body work, and you paint it. what work does it need?

Re: need advice on painting hood stripes
There is a dent/scratch in the rear qtr panel, the passenger door has been replaced due to the dent (was side swiped when parked on the street) so it's red with a white door
Other than that the entire car needs to be repainted - the original clear coat is trashed...

Re: need advice on painting hood stripes
As long as nothing has been bashed in, I bet you could fix it, learn a lot, save a TON of money, and get an incredible satisfaction that you did it yourself
Get a dent puller, drill the holes, make it as close as you can that way, and then use body filler on the rest. Sand it smooth with a cheese grater, then a sanding block, prime it, and paint.
You can buy a LOT of equipment for what the body shops will charge you for labor

Re: need advice on painting hood stripes
That's exactly what the wife & I were thinking! Mainly the money part!
BTW - I checked out your Impala page... AWESOME! That's beyond cool what you are doing for your dad! I love the picture of him wiping it down with his hospital bracelet still on!

Re: need advice on painting hood stripes
personally im not a fan of tho's designs. they dont match the hood. thats just me, heres mine. masking stripes is an art and this took me and a friend 4 hours to do in school just for the hood
