CFI black crinkle finish...

Anyone ever touch up their black crinkle CFI air cleaner cover? I've got afew spots where the paint has worn through, mostly where the hood seal touches it.

I've seen some spray can black crinkle paint. Anyone ever use it? Any tips?

I've used the wrinkle paint quite a bit and the texture is rougher than on the CFI cover.

This interior was completely done w/ wrinkle paint so you can have an idea of how rough the texture will be. Also, if you spray it on thick the texture will be a lot rougher than sprayed on thin stick it in the oven and the texture will be a lot rougher too.

Sounds like I'd want to spray it on very thin.

How many coats did it take for you to get that effect?

Re: CFI black crinkle finish...

One coat, you spray it on once, not several coats. Lay it on thick for that effect. If you spray it too thin it will not wrinkle or it will cover very uneven. You have to spray in a criss cross pattern, first you make passes in one direction, then perpendicular in the other making sure you have an even coating. It'll take some time for it to start wrinkling and it can take quite a bit of time to cure. I used several different types, I liked the Harley Davidson stuff the best (get it at a HD dealer), Eastwood sells it too, VHT brand but I had issues with clogged nozzles on new cans and crappy spray patterns.

I would recommend you get it powder coated........There are at least 20 differnt black powder wrinkels/textures from light to heavy and I am sure one would be a very close if not exact match plus it will handle the wear factor much much better than paint......if you are interested I can get you in touch with a couple of guys in your area.

I agree, if there is a coater that does it in your vicinity go there, much better!

Re: CFI black crinkle finish...

I had mine powder coated in a crinkle finish and it looks 100% original, I feel good knowing the powder coat is pretty durable as well!
