Re: PEOPLE WITH 4INCH COWLS.

depends state to state, its considered an obstruction of view, might fail inspection, not sure if you will get a ticket. I know jersey allows either 2.5 or 3". I have a 4.5, never been pulled over for it, but i dont go through standard inspection either

Re: PEOPLE WITH 4INCH COWLS.

In California it's a simple test.
The cop stands in front of the passenger side head light, holds his arm down at his side, and hold up a certain amount of fingers. Then asks you how many he's holding up. If you can see his fingers than you're legal, if you can't, the hood is considered an obstuction of view and you get a fix it ticket. You must remain seated in a normal position during the test, no leaning forward or sitting up to see over the hood, etc.

Re: PEOPLE WITH 4INCH COWLS.

I'll grab a pic from the inside but it is a pretty big obstruction. I don't have any problems driving it though.

*edit

Here is a pic from eye level. I'm 6' tall if that helps...

Here is mine. It's a glasstek 4". I would consult your local state laws if you are really worried about it before spending the money.

Can you see all the way through that scoop or does it have vents like the Harwood does?

There are no vents. It is completely open but it still has a finished underside and it's the bolt on style.

Re: PEOPLE WITH 4INCH COWLS.

I just dont see a point of having vents on a cowl hood? It doesn't make sense and defeats the purpose of having a cowl hood. I understand to possibly keep things from getting sucked in but isnt that what an air filter is for? Just saying.

Re: PEOPLE WITH 4INCH COWLS.

If you would get a ticket for a 4" cowl hood how do some people get away with driving around with a 6-71 blower and bug catcher scoop on top of that sticking way up in the air?

Or do cops just appreciate bad *** and look the other way http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5DAEkWObw8&NR=1

Re: PEOPLE WITH 4INCH COWLS.

You need to cut that out because then what is really the point of getting that hood if you only have two small vents for an opening in a COWL HOOD!!

The blowers/bug catchers you see, are mounted in the center of the engine compartment, or at least close to it. Therefor when in the driver seat, you can see behind it giving you full view of the right corner of the car, and doesn't obstruct your view.

Re: PEOPLE WITH 4INCH COWLS.

Personally I think 4 is a bit high for a street car. I have Goodmarks version and it is supposed to be a 2 inch cowl, but it measures more like 3 and it took a week to get used to and now it doesnt bother me, but it is harder to see things when parking on the passenger side as expected.

That is a very subjective & unfair test.

A short inspectors hand would be lower than a taller inspectors hand. So it isn't even a standardized, comparable test, from inspector to inspector.

I'm 6' 5".....I have a stock hood.....And I can't even see that corner of the hood, because of how low Firebird noses droop, in comparison to Camaro noses.

If I was failed on that, I would contest it with the state department that is over the inspection stations.

Sorry to go off topic...Im 6'10...do you have to bolt the seat back to drive comfortably? I have tried to find some type of extensions for the seat tracks but have no luck.

Regarding the testing you are talking about...pretty sure I would be screwed as well, I have to have the seat reclined so far to fit in the car!

I have 4th gen seats, so they do sit a little lower than 3rd gen seats. Helps with headroom.

Seats are bolted in to the stock location on the stock 4th gen seat tracks, but are slid all the way back.

Leg length (inseam) plays a big part in how far back the seat has to go too. I have a 36" inseam.

Compared to stock 3rd gen seats all the way back, do the 4th gens provide a little more legroom?

It has been almost a decade since I sat on stock seats, so I really don't remember. I know on both my wife's (she was 5' 10") 90 & my 92, I did a 4th gen seat swap in to both.

Next stock seated 3rd gen I'm near, I'll check & report back for you.

im 5"4 and cant even see halfway down the louvers of my irocz...thats with a power driver seat. id be running people over in parking lots if i had a cowl hood

i learned how to drive when i was 15/16 in my brothers manual seat 90 formula with the stock "cowl" hood. i couldnt and still cant see past the edge of the scoop...unless the headlights are up, then i can see the top of the headlights
