should I buy this camaro?
should I buy this camaro?
I just recently bought me an 83 firebird 2.8L with a E2se Carb, for $535, I really like it, but I really wanted a V8, and now that I had the firebird for 2 months someone is offering me 2 buy a camaro for 400 or 300 dollars, it has body damage on the rear end and the backglass is broken, is a 305 z28, should I go for it?

Why 'hold out' for a 350? 350s are ridiculously abundant - I say if the car is nice and whatnot, I'd go for it and swap a 350 - Who cares what it had stock?!

Because you'd have to swap out a bunch of other parts...

Re: should I buy this camaro?
well, I'd say buy the Camaro. it's a V8, and that's what you want. if you have the money. go for it. a 305 is Not a bad engine. is a 350 a better engine? YES,
it is, but a 305 is no slouch either. it generally gets a bad rep these days because the 350 is much more powerful, can be rebuilt cheaper, it produces more power, it has moe high performance parts and accessories for it, it's reliable, easy to work on, and dependable.
I'd say that you'd be ahead of the game you look at it. you would have the Firebird, ( that would be good on gas ), and you'd have the Camaro with a V8 in it for Power. most of us only have one third gen to paly with. you'd have two. what's wrong with that? My guess is that you'd like your 305 just as much and wouldn't really care that's it's not a 350, and evedn if you wanted more power. 305's can be upgraded too, ( and you'd Still have a car that can beat a Porche ). *S*
Do what makes you happy bro. also that's a great price for it. I say go for it, and be happy. once you own it, you can do whatever mods you want to it. only you can decide what's right for you. you decide, then let us see what you end up with.
Remember, you're buying this car for yourself. not for us. sure, some might do things differently than you might, but that's their right and their choice. right? the same thing applies to you. it's your choice and no choice that you make will be the wrong choice for you, ok?
best wishes whatever you decided to do. *S*

I think everyone missed it but I am going to point it out again. A running 305 Z28 (Notice Z28) is worth 300-400 dollars. Depending on the year you can get that much for the fuel injection system. I'd buy it.

Re: should I buy this camaro?
I bought my 85' IROC in 2009. I payed 1200, 0% RUST It had a new interior, a barely running carbed 305 h.o and a harwood 3'' full cowl hood, a brand new T5 trans as well as a new clutch. It also came with 3 seized brake calipers and no low beam headlights. I swapped the carb, changed all the calipers and rotors new/rebuilt and put in new headlights. I had a well running Iroc for under 2000$. Months later I swapped to a 350 with a new carb/intake again and everything else that is in my sig. As well as some new paint here and there, 99 vette wheels/tires spacers. Again I did all of this for around 3500-4000 Now I have myself a Nice, 300+hp, Running Iroc-z. I would say today its worth 4k-4.5k
You have to know what you are looking for. I could do this again for the same price give or take a few hundred. It takes time to look for what you want and an eye for what you can do with it.
If I were you I would hold out and get a roller or a car with a 305 in it. Swap it out or make it drivable. Dont go for the V6 unless you are planning on driving it like that forever or you have the time, knowledge, and skills to swap everything. Its not hard just allot of work to pull everything out. Once its all out you can drop whatever you want in it without to much hassle.

Re: should I buy this camaro?
When i was looking around recently for mine, all 300-400 would get you was one with no engine/transmission, and a body that needed work.
my first camaro was a junky 91 rs (ground effects split/broke, 3-4 major dents, needed paint) with a 305 for $600
You can buy a running z28 for around $1000, but you're gonna have to look hard, and the money you spend trying to get the body in presentable shape, you would of been better off just spending 4000-5000 on one, because the body is gonna be RUFF.
You should snap some pictures of this camaro, and it'll be a little easier for us to give solid opinions on if it's worth the money or not.

I would buy the Z28 and use the V6 car as a parts cat to fix the Z28. A Z28 is worth more then a V6 car any day of the week. If the Z28 has bad unibody damage then I would just buy it for the motor and part the rest of it out. Can you get any pics of this Z28 ? If so post them up, they could really help to see if its woth fixing up or not.

Re: should I buy this camaro?
ehhhh if the 2.8 car is rot free id keep it...it is much more important to have a rot free car in the long haul than it is to have a 305 or 350 IMO. but with that being said it is much easier to go 305 to 350 than it is to go 2.8 to 305 or 350.....if your just cruising around and enjoying the car you dont need the 350 bud...i cruise around, barely get on it. just appreciate the car....occasionally go to the track for fun....i dont need a 350...but it would be...NICE?
