I plasti-dipped an entire car!!!!!





I used clear coat and masked flames onto the plastic dip.... worked well until removing the fineline tape at one edge where Plasti-dip was sprayed thin and started to peel up.


I know I posted this elsewhere, but I also plasti-dipped my wheels



I also sprayed a single stripe, but was unhappy with the edge I was able to get when peeling up the tape, so I removed it.


I have used this for all sorts of stuff. I painted a ceiling fan for the garage with it over the weekend... works awesome for stuff you don't feel like prepping. Then spray gloss or whatever over the top to change the effect.

 

I have ordered the glossifier.. man that stuff is expensive with shipping and all! Wish I could find that one locally. all the HW stores have the regular black matte finish.
Looking forward to doing my GTA wheels with 5 coats black and one or two of glossifier

 

one thing I like to do with the dipped centers of my snypers is hit it with that STP tire shine in the yellow can. Shines up the dip to more of a satin black instead of a matte black and lasts for quite a while. When I finish porting my LS1 intake I'm going to hit it with the black dip. Should hold up fine.

If your looking for a gloss finish spray clear gloss over the plasti-dip. I found no negative when playing with the stuff on my boys little push car. My buddies that have used the glossifier said it just goes from matte to satin finish...

Well I dipped the car yesterday!!! The stuff is very easy to work with and forgiving. I really like the look of it too. The old hood is being repaired and I'm not done yet as far as well just wait and see!!!

 

Rockyd, did you spray your wheel inserts too? If so I hope that every other person with chrome IROS does the same thing... those look awesome!!! Best looking chrome IROCS I have seen!

I just Plasti-Dipped My rims and Pipes

 

So I know this stuff is removable but for how long? I mean I think I am gonna try a set of racing stripes on my car but know I don't want them forever. Does it ever become permanent? Or should it be pulled off and re applied every so often?

 

My friend did his rims about two years ago and he removed it like 3 weeks ago is not permanent it comes off like vinyl wrap. Just make sure you put at least 3 coats I did 5 on mines.

 

Make sure if you are doing stripes, that you put it on 'wet' and strip the tape off STRAIGHT AWAY, otherwise it will lift...

 

I seriously don't understand the point of spraying that stuff on your GTA wheels. Why not just use regular paint which is cheaper and will be way more durable? It's not like it's gonna be easy to peel that stuff off in between each spoke anyway.

 

I don't want to have to remove the paint and damage the original wheel color underneath. when I would want to sell it I want the wheels the pristine original color. even if I don't like it the future buyer may and with the low miles originality counts a lot!

 

Do you really think it's gonna be THAT easy to remove that stuff from the tiny crevices of GTA wheels? I see a thread titled, 'How Do You Remove Plasti-Dip From GTA Wheels' from you sometime in the future.

 

I have heard that if you put 5-6 coats on it is not hard at all. it depends on the number of coats. if you did 2 or 3 it is a pain I hear!

 

Carlos is right, I did one of my GTA wheels out of boredom and it was a BITCH to get the plastidip off that wheel. I don't recommend it man

 

I did my new hood. I'd prefer it red, but the paint is pretty faded, the rest of my paint is in various stages of fade to the point that it makes the rest of the car look awful, LOL.



I can peel it off if I want, and go back to before, but in the meantime a few chips in the SMC of this old hood I bought out of a shed will be protected from water and the elements. When the car gets properly painted, said chips will be properly repaired.

I made sure to put several coats on it though. I imagine if necessary you could get it off wheels with a scuff pad on a die grinder, especially if you dont use a ton of pressure. I experimented on a couple of things first and with a thin coat its a pain to get off but I think that would work.





Edit because I did some more stuff with plastidip today... still not really dry yet. It will dry and match the hood perfectly... it has a great "semi-gloss" look now but that's temporary, unfortunately. Still I think it will look great and match not only the hood but the bowtie grille too.

 

The black plasti dip hood doesn't look bad at all it looks cool ...and plati dip spray cans are about the same price as paint spray cans like 8$ at home depot I only used 2 cans for all four wheels and they are 22", for smaller rims maybe less paint..I actually like it cuz is reversible.

 

Has anyone had to plastidip over pin stripes? My Iroc has the stock pin stripes and I am worried about them showing up if I don't remove them.

 

how many coats you do on them?

 

If your tapeing off lines with plast-dip , You have to remove the tape while it's still damp . Research .

I asked about painting over pinstripes not making my own smart ***.

 

Well here are some pics of my headlight buckets outside and dry. Im not happy with the masking job here... some of the lines arent quite right. Not sure if that was a masking error or if it was too dry when I peeled it off, but the guy above is completely right about pulling masking tape off when its still wet, otherwise the tape will pull off the dip itself. But even with the flaws I think it didnt turn out too bad. I've seen far more permanent look far worse....



I would say avoid doing really intricate designs with this stuff. Anything beyond this or stripes and I wouldnt want to mess with it. Its thick, but it does weird things to masking tape. Some of it bled through the tape quite a bit. The tape stretches/tears the stuff, etc. Stripes should be doable, but dont be trying to write out "CAMARO" across your door or something with it.

 

did you use any glossifier on your headlight buckets?? i did mine with vinyl wrap but it tore when i got it washed so i might use plastidip.

 

Nope, no glossifier. Just straight out of the can.

Here's my latest Plastidip creation. I wish I would've taken before and during pics but at the time I didn't think about it lol. I refinished my dash pad using fiberglass bondo, fiberglass, filler putty and finished it up with a 3 coat Plastidip job. It's far from perfect but came out damn good. I'll probably get another dash pad from the local pick and pull and do a how to later. Even the texture came out fairly close. So here's the pics...

It's holding up well, the only downside is it's a dust MAGNET. I have to wipe it down atleast once a week.

Myths About Plasti Dip (Vol 1)

 

I cleared flames, and cleared the high wear areas of my kids little plastic push car and the clear coated areas have held up much better than all the rest. I have yet to try clearing the "dip" on anything other that playschool push toy, so may want to try it on something, but from what I have done with it I think it could work fine.

Not a 3rd gen , but I plasti dipped the wheels on my GFs charger . Came out pretty good and its been on there for about a month with no issues.

well this weekend is it if all goes according to plan. I am going to be putting plastidip on my gold cross-laces! I also have glossifier and I think it will be fun. The hardest part will be to mask off the silver lips while covering all the Gold parts. I am thinking it will have to be masking tape. any suggestions? cards wont work as far as I know. I will put on like 6 coats so it peels off well. I will also be polishing the lips to get off the scratches where some dofus scraped the weights off. any suggestions on how to do this yet keep the finish would be appreciated

 

anyone ever quick wax your plastidip? does that make the rims easier to clean?
