Re: The Plasti Dip Thread!
Just try to get at least 4 coats on it in 30 minutes. Pull teh tape off before it dries. If you get it wrong, it's okay, because you can just peel it off and go at it again. Just remember 4-5 coats is the minimum to be able to peel the stuff off easily. I would try to do a good coat every 3 or 4 minutes. Do one bucket, go to the other. Wait a couple of minutes, repeat. It's better to let it sit for 10 minutes, but its hard to get clean lines if you let them dry that long while doing enough coats to get good coverage.

Why would it melt, its rated to +200 degF.Plus the calipers are exposed & get plenty of cooling. This was done a while back, so far, so good.

Re: The Plasti Dip Thread!
Per the Plasti-Dip website, its rated up to 327 F degrees. So it can take quite a bit of heat. I've known people that have painted their plastic engine covers and they've been fine even with all the heat under the hood.

Re: The Plasti Dip Thread!
Here's my latest Plastidip creation. I wish I would've taken before and during pics but at the time I didn't think about it lol. I refinished my dash pad using fiberglass bondo, fiberglass, filler putty and finished it up with a 3 coat Plastidip job. It's far from perfect but came out damn good. I'll probably get another dash pad from the local pick and pull and do a how to later. Even the texture came out fairly close. So here's the pics...

Re: The Plasti Dip Thread!
I gave plasti dip a shot today, somebody did a crappy repaint on my bumper trim on my Formula. I shot a couple coats over them and they look a lot better. Next I'm going to sand my spoiler and paint it, then use the glossifier.
What I started with

The end result, not to bad. Still has the textured look.(I should have stripped them first)

and heres my spoiler I want to try.

I did my dash last week and it didnt turn out as good as RobertFranks, but it'll last until I can afford later down the road to get a new one. I only used bondo. I will try to post some pics that I took with my iPhone later once I figure out how to do it.

If I could mix a lighter red, I'd do my T-tops. How do you think it would stick?

Re: The Plasti Dip Thread!
Save up for the kit trust me, it's beyond a pain in the *** to do a car with the cans. I did my 91 a while back and damn did that suck. The drivers side came out pretty good but really large areas like the hood and roof were tough to get right. My passenger side looked like total $hit. I ended up taking some masking tape, making a parting line and two toned the car, From the body line up it's dipped and from the line down it's gloss black. I like it much better. I'll try to post up some pics of what it looks like later

Re: The Plasti Dip Thread!
Ill 2nd what robert frank said, did my headlight pockets(took 2 tries, learners curve) and thought it could possibly be cool if i did the scoop on my hood. I tried 3 times and could not get it right, i think it was too big an area to use cans becausr part would come out smooth and part of it would be textured like....of course im no doctor, i just play one on tv.

Re: The Plasti Dip Thread!
Oh the kit is definitely the way to go. I was just saying that you could do it with cans. I just did my spoiler and most of my ground effects. I just have to prep the last two pieces and they will be done. I'm going to give the rest of my car a go when I get enough money and after I fix some problems that just popped up.
Re: The Plasti Dip Thread!
Ok I was looking at it last nite and for just cans it will be around 130$ but the kit is 300$ and I looked at a ton of YouTube videos and they were all saying tht you hav to buy a special tip for the can so it will spray evenly
Re: The Plasti Dip Thread!
Can u get plastidip to have that glossy look that paint has. Every where i look pastidip looks like a great solution to my problem atm, but it just seems so flat. Paint seems to give the better shine, but with plastidip I was expecting atleast somewhat of a gloss.
I am looking to do a glossy red color

Re: The Plasti Dip Thread!
No need special prep or anything just clean up surface
Plasti dip is meant to go thick so it covers up some minor imperfections
can does spray evenly havent tried the other tip
regular can tips I notice finger fatigue was quite hi for me atleast

Re: The Plasti Dip Thread!
There is a finishing spray you can use on plasti dip called glossifier. It will bring the shine up to more of a satin finish. I haven't seen anyone get a true glossy finish using just plasti dip compatible products. If you spray gloss clear over it kinda defeats the purpose and makes it a bitch to peel off later.

I should clarify that I met if you spray a regular clear coat over plasti dip it makes the whole shebang harder to removeem

Re: The Plasti Dip Thread!
You can get a pretty glossy finish if you use a regular clear coat. It doesn't stretch or flex like plasti dip so it causes it to flake when you try to peel.
Re: The Plasti Dip Thread!
What do you guys think, for someone with no paint experience and limited cash flow. Do you think plasti dipping would be a viable solution to replace paint, on a temporary basis. I just want to get a shine not a matte finish :S

This is the real reason I did my vert limited cash I don't paint at all and wanted something for temp time. I have done my car and plenty of other cars now too. I bought the kit and it has well paid for its self and some extra cash for me now It takes about 4 hours to do a whole car with prices ranging from 400-800 im talking about 800 for like big @$$ trucks haha go for it watch the youtube videos dipmycar.
