Save the carpet!

Pulled the carpet out of the TA and it was terminally nasty. I decided to try some out-of-the-box thinking.

I soaked it in a whole canister of oxiclean. Needed a tub big enough to hold it, so..........

Check out the brown water. I'll let you know how it comes out

Shaving cream as a spot treatment. It sounded crazy untill I saw how well it worked.

Re: Save the carpet!

i can attest shaving cream works great for spot treatments, my dad showed that trick to me when i was about 14 and ive been using it ever since(car typically smells great afterwards too), Oxiclean or any other cleaner of that sort is amazing if you can soak and scrub in a big enough tub, lol, great thinking!

tips for the shaving cream though, use a tooth brush(or larger if you need) and keep a wet rag handy,

squirt a little shaving cream, scrub with brush, wipe with rag, repeat as necessary until spot is gone

Re: Save the carpet!

Took the carpet out of the soak (MAN that water was nasty) and power-washed it at the car wash. I shot it for 5 minutes, until the water ran off clean.

Came out nice. I'd say it was 75% oxiclean and 25% quarter-car-wash that did the trick.

Only drawback is now I can see the differences in color where the parts not covered by the console and the seats have faded. But at least it's nice and clean. As soon as it dries out I'll post a pic. It may take a while to dry. That carpet must have weighed 100# when it was wet!

Only thing that did not come out was the rust stains from the seat track bolts.
Wish I had taken a pic of the dirty one, because this is a MAJOR achievement!

I still have the back half to do. It's not as bad as this one was but I'll be sure to get a "before" and an "after" shot.

Re: Save the carpet!

You may need something specific to remove the rust stains. CLR comes to mind but I don't know if it would damage the carpet and/or backing. I would leave it as is since it isn't visible anyways.

That's a pretty cool idea. I ran a household rug shampooer on one of mine and got quite a bit out (nasty water too), but I couldn't get to the contours very well.

Man that fading is serious. I think I would look at finding another set.

This'll do until I can afford new. At least it smells nice and doesn't have any food in it!

Get some CLR, spray the rust spot until soaked good and work it in with a clean cloth or brush. Let it dry, vacuum spot, then wet good it with fresh water and a clean cloth. Either wet vac or blot up water/CLR residue thin clean cloths, let dry, repeat if needed. It may not completely remove heavy rust stains, but it helps a lot.
