Painting Engine, Looking for Color Advice

I'm building a new engine for my Camaro, I've got it primed but I'm not sure what color to go with yet. I'm not a fan of the original Chevy orange though (sorry die hards). My engine bay is a semi-gloss black and the car is a dark blue (96-97 Viper GTS blue). I was thinking of doing the oil pan black and then the block/heads/timing cover some other color. Any advise on what would look good with this color combo?

Pics are more than welcome!!!

You could color match car color to engine that would be pretty cool
Don't paint interior block black or some other color some colors can be pulled off but must of time people get carried away and looks tacky

It's a work of art your centerpiece your heart make look good
I think these pics below are good examples

Paint the block timing cover and valve cover same color

Clean up heads and let the natural metal color to show thru and have intake to match

Or you can paint oil pan valve covers etc like this

Sorry about the color lol but that's what I found and I'm not a big fan of the color either but these pics it looks amazing I think less is more

Dude - what are you talking about, I think it looks awesome. Its classic, clean and consistant. The black does look good too, but anything painted clean is cool.

Looks great IMO.

It does look good when done right like I said hence why I posted good examples IMO
I didn't say it look horrible if I was going for classic theme then it's a no brainier
It's all what you want and the look you going for
Hence why I said It wouldn't be my first choice for my camaro I like a more modern look

I was mainly talking about guys who paint there engine like the pic below
This doesn't look classic or clean

Re: Painting Engine, Looking for Color Advice

My initial thought was painting the block/heads/timing cover all one color, maybe a medium gray, kind of close to a natural iron color I guess. I could do the timing cover a different color yet since it's not bolted on yet. I think I want to leave the intake the natural color, a cast aluminum (it will probably be some aluminum variant). Not sure what color to go with the waterpump yet either. The more pics the better!!

Maybe I shouldn't have said hokey - but that's a whole lot of orange where I'm used to seeing chrome

I really like the look of the Aluminum and Black

I still prefer the look of mine, but I'm partial

Re: Painting Engine, Looking for Color Advice

I'm thinking I may do the oil pan, timing cover, and water pump all in black, and then do the block/heads in a lighter color. maybe a gray or something like that. It's too cold here to paint yet so I have time, but I'm just looking for some good pics to drool over for the time being.

I like the pics, lots of options. I painted the pan and timing cover a semi-gloss black tonight, still haven't decided on what to do with the block/heads yet though.

I would want to see any oil leaks !! I have heard from a TV car show that BLACK will help keep it COOL ??? They didn't say how ?? I do know it is possible that paint type & color could help or hurt . I have thought about this & can't make up my mind what is the best choice TO DUMP HEAT ?? The only thing that seems right is that silver could reflect heat back into the motor ?? Like foil On a baked potato .

Re: Painting Engine, Looking for Color Advice

I like orange in old cars that came with orange engines.

3rd gens were not one of them.

Black is good.

If you are going full custom car show stuff, paint the block and heads body color.

Been trying to find the pic cause I've been trying to find good examples for what I want to paint engine I'm looking toward a metallic blue on intake valve covers block leaving heads and oil pan natural aluminum color

With white engine bay white rad support and filler panel and strut mounts white

All black items will have wrinkle black finish like pulleys brake booster a/c unit contemplating timing cover and oil pan in wrinkle black and stainless bolts etc

Idk will see lol

kinda going for this minus the fuel rail covers

Re: Painting Engine, Looking for Color Advice

I have a stock color blue car with the stock color engine bay. I painted mine Semi-gloss black including the timing cover and oil pan. The aluminum intake and painted valve covers (body color) really stands out and also makes the stainless steel cap head bolts stand out as well.

IMHO, if the engine bay is black then make the motor some color other than black.

A lot of the shops that do custom builds paint the engine the body color. It looks sweet.

Re: Painting Engine, Looking for Color Advice

Since my engine bay is semi-gloss black, i think im gonna do the block/heads a medium gray. The oil pan and timing cover are already painted black. The waterpump will match the block/heads. I dont want everything under the hood to be too dark, but i dont want anything really bright and gawdy either. Not to be a Chevy hater, but i just dont like the look of the orange, especially in a blue car. I wont get to paint it for another month or so, unless I get a warm day, (I live in Michigan, lol). Thanks for all the input and pics though guys, keep em coming, I still have time to change my mind!!
