To wrap or not to wrap
I'm wrapping the whole car in satin black vinyl. Should I wrap the solar wing or no?

Re: To wrap or not to wrap
I'd leave it the way it is. I've always wanted one of those BTW.

Re: To wrap or not to wrap
I say wrap it. Make it look like part of the body. When your paint was gloss black that "wing" really flowed well. I have never really liked them, but your car pulls it off. Worst case peel it off. As I type this... Plasti-dip the wing, then you only wastes few bucks worth of that stuff instead of a few yards of vinyl.

Yeah taking it off is not an option. I'm thinking I may wrap it. I can always peel it off if I dont like like. Any expert photoshoppers wanna work their magic? Here are a few more pics of wrap work in progress

Man that is looking pretty good so far. You are a better man than I am. I might not have the patience to wrap every little piece.

Damn...that looks nice! I am sure wrapping your car is not the easiest thing in the world! On that note, how long did it take you to wrap it? I don't think I would have the patience to deal with bubbles in the wrap or how to deal with rounded body parts (like the side view mirrors).
Awesome job thus far!

Seconding plastidipping it. You can always wrap it after if you want and it would honestly probably take longer to photoshop than it would to spray it. Great wrap work btw!
I dig the solar wing Definitely not for every car, but 240SXes, Celica Supras and low 91-92 Camaros look great with them IMO (and I'd bet the 91-92 birds would pull it off well too).

Re: To wrap or not to wrap
That looks really good, you could wrap the solar wing in the carbon fiber to kind of tie the front with the back.
couple of questions for you:
What type of vinyl are you using?
Where did you get it?
Whats the cost?

I'm not a fan of matte/satin on "normal" cars. Not an old school shadetree drag racer, not a high dollar exotic. Just makes 'em look unfinished IMO. ...BUT....as someone who designs and installs wraps, it looks like you're doing a great job! It's not always as easy as it looks! I applaud you taking the time to disassemble and do it properly.
....as for the wing, I'd take it off, or wrap it. Don't leave it gloss. Maybe Carbon?

Your car looks sick man. I'd go for carbon on the solar wing to match the hood. Maybe the decklid too...

Im using 3m satin black vinyl that i bought on ebay. Its a 40ftx5ft roll for $360. That's more than enough to do this car. I have about 10-15ft left that's enough to do my corolla

Re: To wrap or not to wrap
Curious, why satin? Is it supposed to be more installation-friendly than gloss? Or did you just want the appearance? It looks very nice.
Now for the bigger question, why wrap? Is it just to protect your paint, or are there some paint issues that can't be dealt with at this time... if you don't mind me asking?
I've been thinking about carbon fiber wrap on the hood. But I wouldn't have the patience, and such a project would very creatively broaden my vocabulary.

Re: To wrap or not to wrap
question, how was your exterior surface under the wrap? im thinking about doing this instead of paint and was wondering if i can just smooth out all my paint before doing so.

Re: To wrap or not to wrap
Most of the surface was fine but I smoothed out the front and rear bumpers the best I could. I recommend smoothing out the body because every little detail willl show on the wrap. I claybarred the entire car to get all the impurities off the paint then went over with wax and grease remover for best adhesion of the vinyl.

Re: To wrap or not to wrap
Thanks! You gotta have alot of patience doing something like this. It cost me about $450 for a 40x5ft roll of satin and 6x5ft roll of carbon fiber on ebay. It took me about 3 weeks to do it. I took my time since this is not my daily driver. I could've finished it on a weekend but wanted to remove the ground effects and front/rear bumpers.

Re: To wrap or not to wrap
Everything is holding up just fine. As a matter of fact I drove the car in good ol' fashion Florida style torrential downpour and everything is good to go. I did wrap the solar wing and I'm glad i did. Came out pretty good. I rewrapped the hood because I applied too much heat in one section trying to get the wrinkles out and it left these hideous stretch marks. Here's what the hood looks like now.
And the solarwing
And the solarwing

Re: To wrap or not to wrap
have some guys working on my 89 TA and they want to wrap it in 3d carbon. not sure if we are going with matte or gloss or combo of both. Can use any color. Car is Flame Red, but i am thinking black. Can't find any red 3d carbon cars online. Did find a blue one and it looked pretty good, but black would probably be best

Re: To wrap or not to wrap
Ok here is a question, did you wrap the door jambs too? If so, you took it all the way under the plastics I am guessing? I have never seen a whole car wrapped in vinyl, I have seen wrapped hood when I used to do upholstery. Nice work.
