4th gen overflow tank

I am doing the 4th gen overflow tank but i had a question for those of you who have installed it already:

On my 87 t/a, the battery is on the driver's side, the overflow tank is on the passenger side. Should i move the battery to the passenger side or the overflow tank to the driver's side? I'm thnking move the battery. what do i need to do in order to move the battery? the way the car is packed into the garage for the winter, i wont have room to jack it up so hopefully nothing too difficult?

You could make your own battery cables as its pretty easy if you relocate the battery

Re: 4th gen overflow tank

There is a provision for the battery tie down on both sides, so yes, really just need a longer hot cable.

Re: 4th gen overflow tank

If he moves the battery from the drivers to passenger side (closer to the starter), he may not need a longer cable...

Modding 4thgen overflow to fit drivers side takes a bit of modding the neck....

Re: 4th gen overflow tank

Or mount the overflow under the tray, so the batt can stay on the dr side.

Re: 4th gen overflow tank

would it be easier to mod the bottle or mess with the wires? you're right that the wire would be shorter to run to the starter from the passenger side, but what about the ground, anyone know wehre that goes to? also what about the wiring going to the computer? just extend those wires and run them over or do they originate from the passenger side too, therefore could be shortened?

Re: 4th gen overflow tank

If there's stuff on the pass side tray. You'll have to relocate that on top of moving the batt over.Think it be easier to mod the 4th gen piece, but thats just me.I prefer to leave the car as stock as possible & modify/adapt the part being installed.

Why do you want to move the batt over anyway? You dont have to use the battery tray (for the batt) on the 4th gen bottle.Mod the tray for something else or leave it as is.

well i'm also going to try and do the 4h gen washer fluid swap and all the emissions stuff i'm going to remove like the charcoal canister thats there now. I wanted to use the battery tray on the 4th gen coolant bottle so that i wont see it really, this way its hidden from sight by the battery, and wehre the battery was will be just the painted sheetmetal, i was hoping that would make it look cleaner

Re: 4th gen overflow tank

The 4th gen bottles suck anyways. I have replaced mine about 7 times, they either start leaking or the battery hold down stuff breaks off.

An aluminum version of it would be very nice to have, but the plastic ones are nothing but trouble. Mine is a 4th gen car so not the car or installation causing it

Well both of these are reason to mount from under the OE tray.Did mine this way back in 05/06.Still going well.

hmm...i'm thinking of maybe just putting the tank on the driver's side, and keeping the battery where it is. Just remembered that i'd then have to re-route my amp cable too. plus, i have a cool air kit which will be right over the overflow tank so that'll cover it up. maybe if theres a way to paint it so the paint wont come off, it'll blend in fine with the car (since i have to repaint the engine bay when i pull themotor)

Re: 4th gen overflow tank

Moving the battery isn’t too bad if you’ve got decent access up top, just need a good tray, longer cables, and solid grounds. But if the tank fits cleanly on the driver’s side, it might be the simpler route without messing with wiring.
