Hey guys, i just bought my first third gen (83 firebird) and i was looking to change the look a little. But its a red firebird and i cant decide whether to stick with the cragar ss wheels i have or buy some different chrome or black wheels. All input is welcome.
Lots of potential here...I'm thinking the black Cross Laced.
But remember, new wheels and tires are gonna set ya back some serious coin.
What's in your plans for it? It looks to be in good shape; cept for the fender dent...
im wanting to do a motor swap for a 350 then do some mods to that. Then im going to get all body work done, and repainted marlboro red. But its not like i can do all that now i just want it done over time you know?
1. if its running, tune it all up first
2. Check/replace all brakes if needed
3. get the "MAYPOPS" replaced and drive and enjoy the car
4. Find your 350 that you want and start the rebuild of the motor
5. Put the motor in when complete. Set aside extra money for all the additional things you will need for the swap, how's the suspension/shocks/struts?
6. Do the swap, do you have transportation to get around without the car?
7. Do the bodywork and repairs
8. Paint the car
9. Install new wheel/tire package.
This will take time and money....but...a step at a time, you'll get there!
Everything under the car is practically new. And as for a tune up what do you consider a tune up, cause when i say tune up i think oil, plugs, wires, air filter, and a full fluid check and replacement. Also the brakes will be good for a while and no i dont have another vehicle this is my daily lol
You have a good starting point just do a lil along the way and it will all come together. Like Bob said take care of safety issues #1, like brakes,tires..etc. Most of us on here are probably upgrading/replacing parts or doing some sort of restoration to our cars so you are in the right place for finding the answer to any question you may have. Nice car man and good luck with it.
If it were mine, I'd comb the local craigslist for a later set (88 & up) of the 16" Formula wheels, hopefully with tires that you could pick up cheap. They have a great look that looks correct on any year Firebird.
If you're looking for a set of aftermarket wheels the American Racing Outlaw II are perfect for that vintage.

What's the deal? 15 years ago everyone was all for getting rid of the stock wheels and going with 5 spoke C-5 style. Now the tide has turned?
For those of us who like our cars original, they never went out of style. That being said I have a true love for those 70's drug induced geometric paint jobs and wild customz done up until around 1980. I have a 14,000 mile 1973 Trans Am survivor that was heavily customized back in the day - what a trip that car is!
...and as you can see I never lost the love for those white outline tires....
It came to me with BBS 3 piece mag wheels that were put on back in the late 70's and was supposed to look like the then new BMW M1 race cars. I wasn't a fan of the BBS wheels and restored a set of Cragar Fan Stars that I had with a set of the Polyglas tires on them (with tubes). Other notable features of the car are an ASC power sunroof, Cragar sport slats, Recarro seats, Ansen slapper bars & a vintage Blaupunkt stereo.
