It appears to be a nice well taken care of car, if there are no surprises probably worth trying to buy, I like the white letter tires.

Re: could use opinions

I had an '86 back in '86. My speedo went to 85 mph also. That looks like a clean car. Nothing looks molested. Looks like a good find from the pictures.

Re: could use opinions

The door moldings are aftermarket. They were probably installed at the dealer when the car was new. Unfortunately, that style is usually drilled and riveted to the doors and fenders. Look close for rust and paint problems around the rivet holes. It's pretty common for those holes to rust, or the clear coat to start delaminating there. The upside is the correct 85-87 moldings will probably cover the holes if a person wanted to switch.

As Z28s go, it's pretty light on desirable options. Starting from the top, it's not an Iroc, doesn't have the TPI engine, or even the HO 305. No t-tops, no fog lights, no 5spd, no power locks, windows, mirrors, no custom cloth interior, no power seat, no cassette deck, no cruise control, no rear defroster... Someone probably intentionally ordered it light on options to save money.

That said, it looks like a solid car. The stripes look like they are probably due to be replaced. There aren't any readily visible red flags. It's probably not a bad car if you can live with the 145hp, slush box trans, lack of performance options and comfort options. Price doesn't seem too bad. A few years ago it would have been too much, but the condition helps, and the market for more "Fancy Dan" cars trickles down a little.

Personally, I would pass because I know eventually the 86 third brake light would bug me, I'd want a 350 car, or a 5spd, or T-tops. The only way it'd be worthwhile is if the buyer is going to mostly leave it alone, or maybe go hog wild.

Looks like a nice, clean, car. Still has the factory exhaust which is always a plus in my book. Don't plan on taking down any 5.0 Mustangs with it, though. If you can get it for around 6K or under, it'd be a good buy.

Re: could use opinions

From an appearance standpoint, the only thing I don't like is the black door moulding. LOVE the gold....but then....I love gold!

From a "fun" point of view, I doubt it would be hard to just wait a little longer and get something a little more "fun". I'm casually looking for another thirdgen if the right deal comes along, and I want either an L98/350 car, or a 5 speed.

Good looking car. At that price, I would not hesitate if it's as good as it looks. With the one concerns being what Drew points out about the moldings.

Re: could use opinions

Hi there,
Those are original door moldings. I have them on my '86, and I think it was '87 or '88 (for sure) that they switched to body-colored moldings. Nice looking car.

No, they're not. If you blowup the images to fullsize (right click, view image, click magnifying glass) you can see they're aftermarket moldings.

Re: could use opinions

no, those are exactly the same as the moldings on my car. And mine are factory. The moldings are on my SPID, and they were riveted on at the factory. I have seen many early 3rd gens with this type of molding, before the round body colored moldings came out.

Re: could use opinions

Wrong again. All the moldings from 82-92 that were installed by the factory were peel and stick adhesive. The riveted moldings were a dealer installed "Upgrade". Like Jerry Lundegaard's True Coat, Ziebart undercoating, and other parts and services added after the car left the factory.

Re: could use opinions

then how come my moldings are on the SPID? Did ALL dealerships install ALL moldings, and the factory never installed any?

And the peel-and-stick round body-colored moldings are definitely later style.

Re: could use opinions

Until the end of 87 production the moldings are thin, and generally black until 86/87 when they were body color. 88-92 used the shorter and fatter body color moldings. The steel or aluminum moldings riveted to the body, with rubber inserts were a dealer or aftermarket upgrade. They (the dealership) literally would peel off the factory moldings and drill a bunch of holes and pop-rivet the aftermarket moldings on the car.

They marketed the moldings by saying the metal backing was more durable and would protect the car more than the factory plastic. Aside from fading, and the rubber inserts shrinking over time, and issues from the holes drilled in the body, they were probably right.
