Help me pick a paint job
I have a painter and I cant decide on what exactly I want to do for the paint job. The car has been worked on so much lately that the paint job should have already been done. Now its looking like the begining of August . I have bounced around so many ideas and cant stay, "stuck" on one idea
the car is a 1987 IROC, orginally white with the gold lettering etc. Im leaning heavily on keeping it white (maybe pearl?) and having all the decals and lettering painted on. I think I want all the decals to be gun metal or black and not the orginal, gold color.
I've tossed around the idea of doing the hood like the DSE-Z and doing those stripes in gun metal or black.
any ideas? Post pics if you can.

Whats the car look like now? Keeping stock wheels or going after market? Those kind of things all add to the car and come together at the end. Like if you went white with a gunmetal color decal, then aftermarket gun metal wheels would really go well.
All depends on the how you want your car to look at the end and what you're thinking for the overall finished product. Stock, stock-ish but different, custom?

Gixxer92 That IS beautiful!
....OP, don't be so quick to paint on graphics/stripes. If you do, you can't change 'em ever, and they can make (cough) "repairs" more costly. Even high dollar exotic cars have vinyl graphics. I know we ALL have visions of painted graphics, I know I sure did when I painted mine last year, but there's really no need. The vinyl looks just as good. If you were making a 100% full on show car trailer queen I'd agree, but otherwise, go decals. Think it over.
What wheels? Iroc hood?
....don't go pearl if you're back and forth. Know your color. Don't waffle. If you want pearl do it. Don't do it because ehh.....it's cool. It is cool....but if you're not set on it, you'll regret it. What color did you want to paint it a year ago? -go with that color. If it was pearl, go pearl.

Thanks Abubaca and Dyno Dave. Hopefully it inspires blackgloves with idea's. I hand laid my stripes and painted them in silver on the navy blue metallic.

You bring up really good points and I appreciate it. I have never had a car get a full paint job like this. I'm excited and don't wanna have any regrets. The only issue I have with vinyl, well, two issues really. The paint below the decals will not fade with the rest of the paint. im currently taking off vinyl decals off the car and the paint looks dramatically diferent. The other issue is that i wouldn't be able to put decals on it for a while being that the paint will be so new. Isn't there a grace period on new paint jobs?

Re: Help me pick a paint job
A year ago I wanted pearl with having the black racing stripes (currently on) painted on instead of the vinyl. This would be easier if I had the car with me, but for over two months, its spent most of that time at someones shop or house being worked on.
I need a shot of a IROC like the picture posted of the navy blue Z/28 in this thread. I have been a fan of white cars with black accsents every since I bought my (former) 2001 Z28 brand new.
Ive heavily considered going with some black/chrome wheels or gun metal wheels (high gloss etc) to go along with black/gun metal paint that would be on top of the white base color.
The hood is a stock, IROC hood that will probably get the Trac Spec, hood vent package to replace the current vents. Other than that and the wheels, the exterior will basically remain stock. Nothing over the top. I want my decals/emblems to be black/gun metal.
My current stripes have a goldish/bronze pin strip following along side the black racing stripes. Ill post a pic of it. The paint and stripes have gone to hell since the pic and the house behind the picture is not mine

Re: Help me pick a paint job
The white/pearl won't fade much at all, so a color difference down the road won't really be an issue. White is the best, no real pigment to fade. -which is not to say it won't fade at all, but it's a lot better than red. Quality of paint and clear make a difference too.
....Ideally you want to wait a good 4 to 6 weeks before putting anything on the paint. Wax or vinyl.

Re: Help me pick a paint job
I personally think a pearl white Iroc with black accents would look awesome. -when you say stripes/graphics, are you talking like stock Iroc decals, or are you talking heritage/racing stripes like gixxer's car?
OK I didn't see that pic before posting. Is that what you're considering going back with?

It sounds like you already have a really good paint scheme that you're leaning towards. Not much of a reason to ask for help with a paint scheme besides getting opinions or details. Go with what you want! I think the white and black would be really nice and clean looking.
I personally like the stripes that stop on the hood better than the ones that go all the way down the bumper.

White, black, and chrome just isn't working, man. The car is in desperate need of some color accents.
There's nothing wrong with the beautiful simplicity of a pearl white.

Agreed. If he went white with black stripes, I’d say he would NEED black wheels. Those chrome corvette wheels wouldnt look good. It does seem like he really wants white with some kind of black stripes on it tho.

This looks awesome! Sometimes less is best and this is coming from a guy that like you loves his full length stripes! This has a great look if you follow this through and get all smoked lights like indicated. I think head lights and tail lights smoked also. The black IROC GFX badges are a must. Paint the door handles, key locks and antenna base to match the white. If you have door guards paint them also. This is a very modern look. I don't see plain here.

I'm not set on anything. I'm actually leaning towards the last picture I posted with some gun metal or black wheels

Re: Help me pick a paint job
Tough to beat...
If the car is bone stock and all original I’d say stay close to the factory look... Might be cool to see all the factory decals, stripes and wheels with pearl...
I think the 91-92 cars with the spoiler come off a little better when they stray from the stock looks because the Z28 was more of a blank canvas.. I like the stripes with the wing and the guys that do the body colored grille... I also tend to think the IROC louvers look out of place with stripes..
gixxer92 that car looks great! Do you have a thread on it? Nice color!

Re: Help me pick a paint job
Ok. I know this isn't a Camaro, but it was a custom job that I did 1.5 years ago. As was mentioned, having the stripes painted on does make it difficult if you ever need to repaint. In the case of this Mustang, the paint started peeling off the hood and I wasn't going through the paint process again, so it was bought back by Ford.

Pearl white would be cool and unique, expect to pay more for it though. Its 2-4 extra coats of paint since you have to put a transparent pearl coat over the white.

Re: Help me pick a paint job
A friend of mine back in the 90s had a 1988 convertible IROC 5-speed that he did in Pearl. He said it was a stripe delete car so when he had it painted he didn’t put the stripes back on. The paint was really nice and he put wheels very similar to the ROH Thirdgen Firehawk wheels on..
He had a ton of work done to the car.. apparently he “blew” the motor somehow right after he bought it from a dealer (car had low miles as it was back in the 90s) and he got the dealer to put in a new motor. He had some kind of professional relationship in the car business with the dealer and paid extra on top of the warranty to have the motor enhanced. Cam, intake, heads, headers, stuff I can’t remember.. He “blew” the transmission and had that all enhanced too.. Car was super fast and loud and inspired what I did to my 87 5-speed for performance and probably made me want to buy a convertible too.. I think his license plate was some variation of “CEE YA”.. Had a crazy sound system in there too..
I think he ended up selling it and went to a Vette and then a Porsche.. Wonder if that dude is still out there going to the track..
I still remember that pearl convertible though.. Very cool car.. Wish I had pics of it..

Re: Help me pick a paint job
I dropped the car off last week. Finally! They said it would be ready in 3 weeks
Went with bright white
Removed all the gold emblems and decals and replacing them with black/silver
Bought a 91-92 grille. Having it sprayed white. I'll do a black bowtie decal (nylon)
Bought smoked side marker lights, brake light/spoiler, and turn signal lights.
So I should get the white with black accent theme like I wanted. I'm so excited!

The father-in-law is suppose to go with me to pick the car up this friday. The shop is outta town and an hour and a half away (roughly) I wish I could haul the car here.
I've waited for this moment for a long time. I've wanted a full car paint job on several cars I've owned and this is a first for me. Feels like Christmas is nearing
