Yeah Vinny, my grandfather had a light green early 80s Caprice with green vinyl interior. It was awesome.. After that he bought a brand new red S10 pickup with no options (4cyl, crank windows, stick shift, 2wd, plastic floors, no A/C, etc). He had that S10 until he passed away 25 years later. He didn’t believe in spending money on cars... knew how to fix them though (he was an engineer). When I got my first IROC back in 1992/1993 he told me I would get pulled over every day in that thing and I should have bought a Honda. He was sort of right. My aunt had bought a brand new Camaro SC around 1986 and sold it after a couple years because she kept getting pulled over in it. She actually loved the car otherwise. Man, they were right about attracting cops back then.
I daily drove an 86 "non SS" Monte Carlo for nine years. Best dependable car I ever had it was so comfortable.

same,im an f-body (or a-body lemans, skylark, chevelle, gto, cutlass) kind of guy but there are some wicked stangs and the last couple generations are sweet to look at and drive.(i hate admitting it too, lol)
Re: Anyone else feel that after the third gen design the Camaro & Firebird went downh
i drove an 84 berlinneta 305-auto for 10 years year round,i frigging loved that car, never had to do anything other than regular maintenance
and this was in Canada, not in the warm south....it wasn't fast but it was enjoyable...bought it for $4000 with 50,000 km.
damn i miss that car.it was hands down the best car ive owned and there's been many.

Re: Anyone else feel that after the third gen design the Camaro & Firebird went downh
I think there might be some confusion with the generations too.. The 5th and 6th gen share a roof line and the profile
looks so similar... Especially the late 5th gen and early 6th gen..
I was almost into the 5th gen.. I thought the styling was going in the right direction. Sales for the 5th gen were decent. The 6th gen Just has no face, no personality.. It’s not ugly but doesn’t look like anything either..
I don’t remember cars getting hated on for being ugly and I definitely don’t remember anyone calling thirdgens ugly back in the 80s/90s.. I didn’t even find people disliked the 5th gen when it came out.
The 2020 Mustang gets a lot of complaints too, It’s similar looking.. Squinty lights, extra aggressive styling and no face.. no personality..
Its like the C7 and the ZR1... A lot of people thought the extra aggressive front end on the ZR1 looked ugly compared to the face of a C7.. Well every car now has that extra aggressive video game styling..
Re: Anyone else feel that after the third gen design the Camaro & Firebird went downh
5th and 6th gen look so much the same I think its dumb they call them a different gen. Look the same to me. the 97 and 98 Camaros looked more different than these. Hell the 90 and 91 Firebirds looked more different than the so called 5th and 6th gen.

As far as these new cars go man I have to say the Challenger is light years ahead in the looks department. It looks like a real throwback muscle car. As far as the powertrain though ive driven a newer ZL1 and a 2018 Mustang and they are very impressive. The last Challenger I drove wasn't in the ballpark with them as far as performance but it was probably 6-8 yrs ago. I have to say the ride was very smooth though it reminded me of my old Monte Carlo.

Man I took a new ZL1 1LE for the day a few weeks back and I was SO impressed with that car. Yes it was impossible to see out of, and switching lanes took 13 double checks, but it drove incredibly well. Even in 6th gear it would just keep pulling. Shifts smoother than butter, the handling is super tight without the ride feeling like a skateboard, and the tech inside was fantastic. Cooled / heated seats, alcantara everywhere, big nav screen, the whole shibang. It's expensive, but it's a TON of car for that money, and is extremely capable right out of the gate. I've driven every typical exotic / high performance car you can think of, and that thing puts up a hell of a fight against them, especially considering it's a quarter of the price.

Also, both your cars look fantastic.
I hear you... I know a guy who has a tuned 2017 SS and is worried he’s going to run in the 10s and be kicked off the track for not having a roll cage. He keeps the car immaculate and the performance for the price had me thinking it would be fun..
But even his wife who is in to cars wants a Thirdgen so he’s been out looking for a decent one at a decent price for her..
He’s even been looking at C7s because they are trying to get rid of them now.. It’s perfect for him, he just cares about mostly performance and going to the track.. It’s like they made the new Camaro for those people but there aren’t enough of them..

Looking for C7s is very tempting. About 18 months ago, a friend in Pittsburgh picked up a leftover '17, brand new, for $44K. Sticker was $59K. I had just bought my '88 GTA recently. If I had come across a deal like this first, I might be driving a C7. I love that style.
Too bad I don't have a three-car garage. Or really, maybe it's lucky (financially) that I don't.

Agree with you about the looks. When the 6th came out, it took me quite a while to, at a glance, be able to identify which was which. I can now, but it did take a while.
But it had to be called a different generation. Totally different experience inside the car.

Did you get an opportunity to get the car up on a lift and check out it's construction? It's as impressive underneath as it's acceleration/handling/braking, and is light years ahead of anything else I've seen recently.

I saw one Porsche 944 growing up and I absolutely loved it... It was for sale and I wanted to buy it.. The IROC still won out though.. I would never have confused the two seeing them in person even as a 10 year old who didn’t even know an IROC was a Camaro when I first saw it..
I had friends that had Dodge Daytona’s and none that looked like that one... Dodge did take IROC from Chevy and probably thought it would do something for them... The IROC Z had the look and turned the heads... Still does... The Daytona IROC was a big nothing...
You posted a bunch of red sports cars, but many were a stretch..
Eclipse? No way
Reatta? Nope
Mustang? Hell no.. square lights is about it..
Fiero??? No one ever mistook a Fiero for an IROC
Supra? Absolutely not..
Even back in the 80s/90s you could confuse a Vette IROC and Firebird from the side mostly...
When the IROC came out in 1985 it looked waaaay closer to modern cars than everything else at the time.. It probably got similar attention to a Corvette ZR1 in a showroom now.. It probably drew people right over to it amongst the bland 80s hubcap cars.
I would have loved to see a 1985 showroom.. The IROC Z just wouldn’t fit in at all...
I also think maybe being a “cruiser” as you stated before is a good thing now... Most average people aren’t going to the track and I am afraid enough to floor my 305 with a cop around every corner.. Maybe the next Camaro (If there is one) should turn heads and be fun to cruise.. Maybe make it tuneable like the new Supra (Toyota actually made the car so that people can install aftermarket performance parts... They could have done it themselves but want to pay tribute to the tuner culture).,.
The Thirdgens stood out to people that weren’t even car people.. People in my family noticed them and a couple bought them.. That was a stretch for these people that normally don’t care what they drive... People felt like they were getting a vette for a good price.. Many people preferred the thirdgens to the Corvette so all the better..
A chevy showroom now every car has the same styling and big black wheels.. They need to set the Camaro apart again...
I like the new Camaro but it doesn’t look like anything common people want to drive... Third gens had more non car people buying them... Those 80s/90s RS Camaros were everywhere..
1985 Chevy Cars:
You posted a bunch of cars that arent in any where near the same class as a Camaro. The sports cars of the 80s had long front ends and were sleek. Like the ones I posted
What car does GM make that looks like a 2019 Camaro? Answer: None
The cars I posted (red) are equally similar in my opinion to 3rd gen Camaros as the Mustang/Challenger is to the 6th gen Camaro
The 3rd gen is like your child. You're going to defend it and see it through your 3rd gen loving eyes.

Me too. I think they should have never tried seperating the two into two different generations. They are as different as the early and late 4th Gens.
What you cant see about the 5th and 6th while they cruise down the road is very different however. Technology hit crazy levels with the 6th gen. For sure when you compare a 2019 to the 2010.
Re: Anyone else feel that after the third gen design the Camaro & Firebird went downh
Ok, no sarcasm.
I like thirdgens. I bought one. Then I found a website dedicated to them. As would be expected, many others here feel the same way, which is why we stay. I could've bought a newer Camaro, but I don't like them as much, so I didn't. I don't deny the engineering, quality, performance. Great car. Just think the design is lacking drastically.
...but now here, on our own website, we're biased, and can't think objectively? We're supposed to like the design because why? Because you said so?

If you cant see the lack of objectivity in this thread you never will. Cant help you
This thread... which is on a 3rd gen website, is about... 5th and 6th gen Camaros. Please don't forget that little important piece.
I never said anyone should LIKE the design. But the opinions on here on the topic seem way over the top. People trying to make a point and then stating things later that are against the point they tried to make earlier.
If you noticed I posted facts/specs and lots of pictures/evidence to back my claims. On top of my own opinions. I love all generations and I haven't said anything overly negative about anyones car because... I love them all. I feel like I'm one of the few people in this thread that's actually been objective.
Re: Anyone else feel that after the third gen design the Camaro & Firebird went downh
I'm not saying you're wrong. But I will suggest that you're splitting hairs with regard to objectivity. If someone doesn't like the zeta/alpha Camaros because they're Pontiac fans, and they resent the zeta/apha for it, who cares? There are a gazillion reasons why people like and dislike every car out there. To dissect everyone's reasoning and apply to conversation is futile. A lot of times, especially with appearance, it's hard to really say WHY you like or dislike a certain design. Heck, I've seen plenty of cars out there that I think are ugly, but then I'll see it at a certain angle and be like, dang, that's pretty sharp! I know a lot of people don't like it because it's not really an F body. I think that's stupid reasoning....but still....who I am to tell them what to like? Kinda like the Corvette guys and flip up lights. At the end of the day, you look at a design, and you like it or you don't. You typically don't consciously decide. It just happens. -and heck a lot of times it changes! I hated the c7 when it came out, but it has really grown on me.
Re: Anyone else feel that after the third gen design the Camaro & Firebird went downh
...and to be fair, I suppose everyone debating the how and why is somewhat splitting hairs. -But it is a thirdgen website, so I suppose you have to expect some bias.

Re: Anyone else feel that after the third gen design the Camaro & Firebird went downh
I gave the 5th and 6th gen a chance...
I have thought about buying both and when I didn’t I just really sat and thought about why I don’t love the new Camaro.. Then I heard a lot of other people saying the same things. Then I thought about why people loved or disliked previous generations..
The Cars I posted were cars that would be at a Chevy dealer in 1985. The point was the IROC stood out more back then compared to what people were driving.
All the new chevys have aggressive styling, squinty headlights separated by a bow tie grille and giant rims... Everythiing is sportier now so it’s harder to stand out... you have to go against the grain a little.. I showed my wife a 2020 Camaro and she thought it was a Buick.. I thought the 2019 SS Camaro was an SUV the first time I saw just the front end closeup.. The first time I saw a 2017 SS it reminded me of a Toyota or Lexus.
Its cool looking and you can get it with tons of power, a black hood with a bulge, a giant spoiler, splitter and side deflectors, etc but it ends up having a tuner/boy racer/WRX look to it, not the same as pulling up in a vette. They somehow made the C7 a track car and a cruiser.
I was just saying they should restyle the Camaro to have more of its own look. Ditch the bow tie and give the car a face again. I’m not trying to be biased, but a lot of people are saying the same thing and it got me noticing it too. People like the Challenger... I don’t want one of those either, but I don’t hear people saying they’re ugly..

The Challenger looks great and as I stated I test drove them twice. Once in 2012 and right before I bought my 19'. They are even heavier and bulkier than the 5th gen Camaro. Which statistically is the largest Camaro ever. So anyone that loves a smaller car that's nimble can forget a Challenger. Me personally, I don't care what a car weighs as long as it performs. The Challenger does that.
I would have never guessed anyone would confuse a 6th gen Camaro with a Buick but I'm not everyone. Some people see the new camaro having no face or personality, I see the opposite. I see it having a lot of lines and details. The 4th gen had the least in my opinion and it pains me when I think that I sold my 01' Z/28. I loved that car.
As it was said earlier, you can find an ugly model in ever generation. You can find an awesome model in every gen too. The 5th gen Z/28, though rare is a good example. The ZL1 cars all look outstanding. Just about every base model Camaro ever made, does little to nothing for me.
I was not a fan of the Berlinetta but finally saw one that I liked just last week. Its posted in the Nomination thread for September and is red. I'll just never be a big fan of those 3 or so holes in the grille that they have over the other models

You are right but somewhere along the line (you included) started in with the performance, features (remember the rear-view) and options which we ALL agree that there is no comparison..The funny thing is that the performance part is not objective, It is fact. The design, is nothing but objective and that makes for a great thread.
I guess I will be the one to just come out and ask it, you are on a third gen site and I see you own one. From all the factiods you posted, all the other non third gen related cars (don't forget you posted a pic of a model box of a third gen...I got where you were going with that one) and your opinion on the new Camaro over your third gen why did you even buy a third gen? Do you really like and respect the car with all it short comings? IDK just a little confused here. Maybe you can shed some light on this for me.
BTW Black gloves don't take this behind the keyboard wrong, I really do want to know your reason on how and why you bought your third gen.

I absolutely love my Iroc. My first car was an 84 Z/28. Before I bought my 19' I had contacted a host of 3rd gen sellers, on this site and off the site. My wife was against owning another old car. I even looked at 4th gen Camaro's. There is nothing about the 3rd gen I don't like. I don't mind replacing and upgrading engine parts and exterior parts. I also don't mind buying a new car that really needs zero modifications. I probably will with my 19' but it's more about it being fun than "I really wish it had this" even down to the wheels. I'm probably going to plasti-dip my stockers
When it comes to high performance GM made cars, I'm a huge fan. Every generation too. The only reason I probably came off to some of you as being a 3rd gen basher is that some of the remarks on the 5th and 6th were either flat out wrong or made little to no sense. The constant complaints about the weight is what really made no sense because people are touting the Challenger and love their 3rd gens. When the 5th and 6th gen measures smaller and weighs less than a challenger. As I stated before too, why would anyone care? For sure since it performs as such a high level? We have to throw everything to include the kitchen sink at our 3rds to make them perform at the level a 6th does and I'm talking about every race imaginable. So why harp on weight?
I cant wait to get my 3rd back. I'll have it till I die and have already told my oldest son it's his when I pass. Or... he will get the call first, to buy it if I ever sell it.
I recently had round 2 of high performance parts installed in my IROC. When it's time, I have plans for a more updated motor. Its currently sporting a 350 tpi out of a 91 Corvette.
I find pleasure in every generation and regardless of what the dyno says.

Re: Anyone else feel that after the third gen design the Camaro & Firebird went downh
To answer your question and I forgot to in my lengthy response
I've been asked the same question by my kids. I cant really give an answer because the cars are so different. The IROC was built and designed so long ago and so much has changed that it's not really apples to apples. I love them both for their own reasons. Most teenagers these days ask me "what kind of car is that" they dont even know it's a Camaro which really surprises me. It also draws attention because they now appear rare and when they're in good shape, people approach me and ask questions. That's fun! I do like customizing it and giving the car it's own identity. Its fun to drive and theres nostalgia
My 6th is what I would think most gear heads or Camaro fans have always dreamed of. It has everything coming from the show room floor. Now this is just my opinion obviously. But the looks, performance, feel, sound etc are awesome. Its a lot of fun to drive

Re: Anyone else feel that after the third gen design the Camaro & Firebird went downh
I will say the 6th gen base Camaro is cooler looking than a 1986 base Camaro..
In general base models aren’t total pieces of crap anymore...
We got a base Honda Accord brand new 2017 and it has power everything, keyless entry, backup camera, Bluetooth for phone and audio, voice controls, 17” brushed aluminum wheels.. The upper models have led running lights, leather, heated seats, GPS, spoiler, 19” wheels, sunroof, V6, etc...
Have to say a base model in 2017 doesn’t feel like a base model, and that’s a good thing..
I liked the early 4th gen Camaros. Not a huge fan of the stock wheels, but the SS was mean looking..

I like the 93-97 Camaro, for sure the SS model. As you stated they look mean. The one thing I dont like is how pointed the front end is. If they had made it between that and the 98-02 it would have been even better. The sunken headlights are cool too. I prefer the look of the 98-02 however

I was not a fan of the Berlinetta but finally saw one that I liked just last week. Its posted in the Nomination thread for September and is red. I'll just never be a big fan of those 3 or so holes in the grille that they have over the other models
You hit it right on the head with this one, and man is this the truth. This is where I do think differently with regards to the new Camaro. I really liked the 5th gen when it was launched. modern twist with some old mixed in I thought GM hit a home run I feel the 6th gen is just a better model variation. Just like the Berlinetta to the 92 Z. I feel this is all GM did and IMHO I think they took it to far, too much detail and then to make it worse they took that front end and used it everywhere. Have you seen the new Blazer. Even the door design with the elongated triangle looks like the Camaro. The new RST pickup uses the Camaro front end. Iroc vert posted some great pics that you can see the similarities in the 2 generations. I love driving the new cars with all the goodies and really appreciate that, and one day I will own one as any car guy should. I probably will wait for the gen 7 Camaro or the C7 vette. Now that is a design!

I was very close to buying this car.. 1994 Z28 6-speed 70k Miles black leather interior is mint. Bought from 1st owner (friend) only adult owned. Bone stock never raced all manuals, window sticker, original paint and clean Carfax...
Pretty cheap but I got a C4 with lower miles for a few more bucks...
Definitely would have thrown the SS/ZR1 wheels on that car..
I do like other gen Camaros besides the third.. 1st gen is great too but too expensive for a nice one that’s not a project.. A really nice Gen 1 restomod would be awesome!

I have only seen the Blazer once or twice and I dont even recall any specifics. It was on their website. I'm not tracking what the RST is.
I dont think there will ever be a 7th Gen Camaro and if so it will be awhile. They mentioned something about stopping the Camaro production in 2025.
I think shortly after 2025 we might see things return like the Ford Lightning, Chevy Typhoon, and Cyclone, which would be really exciting if they do kill the Camaro (sadly)
I think Mustang and the Challenger all have their days numbered too. Their production numbers are falling and the market is moving from these types of vehicles

I had a full bumper 72' Z/28 and the 70-73 body style is my all time favorite look. I'm a big fan of the 66 G.T.O
There really isnt many GM high performance cars I wouldnt own if I had the budget and space. I feel like I can make any of their cars, regardless of the year, look awesome. Even the nasty 74' Camaro

That is a great looking car. I like the '93-'97 Camaros. One of the fairly rare stretches where I preferred Camaro to Firebird. But they ruined it with the Chrysler Concorde headlights in 1998. Then it was back to Firebird for me and at that point I was ready to buy and got a new '98 Trans Am.
Before I bought my GTA, I sometimes would search for '93-'97 Z-28s.

I will just say that I'm contemplating a full paint job on my GTA someday. It's currently torch red. Nice color, but if I do this, it won't be red anymore.

I love the flame red in IROCs and GTAs
I’d be curious to see a more modern dark garnet metallic red though too.. The 6th gen Dark Red Metallic is nice..

Did they even make a blue GTA?
Good question. I don't recall ever seeing one. A dark metallic blue would look good. I did recently see a 4th gen Trans Am in a really nice deep metallic blue. I wonder if that was original paint, but it was a beauty.
The red used by Cadillac is really nice. Crystal red I think it's called. Looked great on my '11 CTS Coupe.
If I do this, I'd go with either a metallic blue, or that lime rock green color that was on Corvettes for a short time. Both would go well with the tan interior. I just don't want to spend the money now, and my car really isn't in need of a paint job.
Saw a reference to "ultra blue" in 1991 and "medium quasar blue" in 1992. There was also a color called "dark bright teal" in '92. Sounds like it would cancel itself out.

That would be a pricey job to get a whole color change.. all the jams and engine, etc.. You’d have to REALLY want it...
And on a nice car like that you’d have to spring for a show quality job..

Yeah, if I do it, it won't be Earl Scheib. I'd go for the full, complete paint job. That's why it will be a while. I just bought a car this year and a repaint just for fun isn't in the budget.

The RST is Chevy's new model of pickup truck, Yes pickup. See what I mean by it is here already. Below are pics of both. This is probably a big reason for the thinking that the cars will go away. Just look at this style. These are what you were talking about, pretty soone there will be no need for a car when SUV's and trucks perform, handle and look the part
A buddy of mine bought one these last month. Notice the side air cuts in the front fender, similar to the Camaro's The "RS" logo is the same that is on the Camaro with the edition of a T for truck.

Depending what your plans are for the car change everything. If it's taking it to the local gtg or taking it to a few shows. The door jams may or may not need to be done. The engine bay can be hand sanded and rattle canned the color your painting your car in a matte finish. Again, it depends on your goals and intentions.
My car is literally getting painted today. It was the factory white and I'm going with a brighter white. I dont think I had them do the jams but I'm not trailering the car or going to shows every other weekend either.
What colors do you have in mind? I knew a guy that had a yellow Mustang and had the car painted a bronze color. It looked good and I had no idea It was previously yellow until i rode in it one day and could see just a little yellow around the firewall/hood area. It wasn't overly obvious but I saw it when riding in the car

Ok, I've seen these. I just never put those two things together. I guess I would file this into the decade/generation thing I mentioned earlier when I posted pics of various vehicles from different decades. That's the style of the current trend and decade we are in. The 80s pickups all had those rectangle headlights like our 3rd gen fbodies do. Just one example I can think of right now. That was a trend/generational thing for that decade
