Air/Fuel Gauge

Hi,
I was just wondering how many one you guy have an Air/Fuel Ratio Gauge, and where did you mount it. Oh yeah, is yours constantly on, or does it go on and off while your driving. While i'm driving it seems to go about half way up the dail, and then it goes all the way down to Lean, until I get back on the gas? Does this sound right?

Sounds out of adjustment. It should read half way on a stock engine and slightly rich under WOT. If you've done mods to your car and haven't adjusted fuel pressure or done a custom eprom then you're probably running lean. Either that or you've got something else wrong. This is why I built my own gauge.

I have one and it's installed on an a-pillar pod. I used to have the Autometer Phantom Series digital A/F gauge. They both go off the scale towards lean on cruise. On my car, this is because of highway mode, though (at first I thought something was wrong, too!). On your 83, I wouldn't know why it does that. On the other hand, don't forget that our O2 sensors are narrow-band sensors; meaning it only measures inside a narrow area between rich and lean, so it's gonna go off the scale pretty often (I guess depending on who made your gauge). While you're driving around, it should either stay in the middle like JPrevost said, or bounce around between rich and lean. The difference is only how fast the gauge "reads" and updates from the sensor. The faster gauges will appear to bounce around due to the computer constantly adjusting the A/F ratio to bring it to 14.7:1. The slower gauges just sort of "average" out and hang around the middle. I got rid of the Autometer for this reason: it read way too fast. I can appreciate accuracy, and the Autometer gauge had that :hail: , but it can only be as accurate as it's sensor, and face it: our sensors don't merit a gauge quite that good.

nordskog, makes a couple of a/f gauges, and you can buy a wideband O2 from them that works with it. that would solve the bouncy needle.

Okay,
I just wanted to know if anyone else was having the same problem. I think it might just be my ECU trying to lean out my fuel mixture. I am no longer hooked up tp the ECU, because I have a non- Computer controled carb, and a vacuum advance distributor. I'll take some pictures tommorow of the gauge, I mounted it in my scoop.

Thanks,
Robert

that norscog one i mentioned, is a stand alone unit, you buy the gauge, and their wideband O2, sensor, and wiring harness for it and you don't need a computer.

They all should be able to stand-alone. Most of them just splice into the ECM-side signal wire, which if you don't have an ECM, just goes to the o2 sensor.
