did i get ripped off?

It seems u guys are payin a lot less for your cars than i did for mine. I have a 91 RS, new paint when i bought it. 46,000 miles, no winters, no rust. It has a 2.5 inch custom bent exhaust on it, with a flowmaster 80 series. I paid 6500..think i paid too much?. Please lemme know..and preferrably nicely. (not..ha.u'r an idiot like some of u do)..if ya dont have any senseble input..dont have any at all

It's hard to tell without seeing the car, but even considering the milage I'd say that's high for an RS. I also have to wonder why a low mile no winters car needed paint.

i think he just wanted it to look better than factory and have it clear coated, but its still factory color. Its' that shiny metallic stuff, and it also has ghost stripes under the clear coat

hold on guys....he said it has metallic paint with ghost stripes. That's quite a paint job. A good 88 up thirdgen around here is 5 grand. One with new paint is more. I sold a 92 firebird with new paint, transam hood, and in absolute mint condition for 5750.

Here's some questions for you to answer. What kind and condition is the interior? What engine do you have? Transmission? Did your car come with a good sound system? Does it have non-factory wheels? Airbags?

All of these things can raise/lower the price of a car. Are you happy with the car??? that's what is important.

Got my car in 2000 for $6000 (9 year old car)

-1991 artic white/red RS
-305 TBI 5 speed (ya I know 305)
-t-tops
-50,000 miles
-no rust (stored winters)
-Z28 wheels (painted white inserts)
-perfect interior
-clean engine
-pretty much nothing wrong with anything on the car.

-stripes, wheels, stereo, tint, rear disc, posi, 3.23 gears, and alot of small little touches made the car my own.

Keep in mind that I live in Minnesota, the #1 state in the country to use salt on the roads in the winter. Pretty much imposiblr to find a decent 3rd gen. I dont feel bad at all for the price I paid for my perfect car.

The only reason I got an RS insted of a Z28 was that insurance was about double (damn speeding tickets)

Doesn't seem like to bad of a deal-actually it seems pretty average. Around here, '91-'92 third gens go for pretty good prices, I'd say around $5,000+. Those are usually stock and with many more miles on the drive train. The custom paint job on the car sounds pretty cool, and the condition of the cars sounds great too. IMO you did not get ripped off.

I got my 86 T/A WS6 for $1300. It was in very good shape, but had the LG4 motor in it and had Camaro 15" wheels.

I got this 96 T/A 6 speed modded and loaded for $6400 last year,

Bought it for 50% of the book value.

Well, one afternoon while cruising with a friend of mine (he used to own the 96), he mentioned that he might sell his T/A.
Jokingly I said I'd give him $6K for it. He thought about it, checked what was owed on the car, and we settled on $6400 so that he would have $2K to buy another car.
His main reason for selling the car was that it was costing him almost $700/month to own it. $425 payment, $200 insurance, then gas.

I owned it for about a month and then I decided to sell it to my brother. I sold it to him for $5500 cash and his 96 Camaro,

I had the Camaro for about 3 months and then sold it to buy some more parts for my 86 T/A's TPI conversion,

Now I have 1 86 Trans Am and 1 86 Firebird, T/A has no motor in it, and the Firebird doesn't have any door handles. So I basically have no car at the moment that I can drive.

In response to 3.1 eye candy, the interior is perfect..basically the only thing wrong was it's missing a screw here or there in the kick pannel area along the floor (big deal), the radio was factory, im in the process of fixing that (all eclipse..but im happy to actually have the factory stuff..i wanna be able to put it all back origional.) The engine is a 305 tbi, no mods when i bought it, stock tranny, 16 inch wheel option w/tires one size plus sized (should have 235/55/16 on it, its got 245/50/16), and yes it does have 1 air bag. Honestly i love it..only put 5-6k on it per year when its on the road..its my summer daily driver

I wouldnt worry about it. These cars go for some pretty high prices around here.

All in all with what you mentioned, I'd say you paid 500 over. But that's just what I'd have payed for it. But you are right about one thing....salting the roads ruins the market of older cars. If your car is as clean and rust-free as you claim it, then you got an excellent buy. Treat it nice and in a couple decades you can sell it for twice what you paid. Have a nice day.

I bought my 92 RS for $5900. It was $5200 but it was from a dealer, so $700 in taxes and such. It had 63,000 miles, 305 TBI, perfect interior, near perfect exterior, and minimal rust.

Then I sold it for $4000 cause the nose was crapped up and had a tranny problem. I bought my 89 IROC, no underbody rust, perfect interior except headliner, 83,000 miles, 5.7L TPI, some new parts, Ravin exhaust, and paint 5 years ago for $5200.

After owning this IROC, I wouldnt pay $6500 for a stock RS.

Hey if you like the car, you didn't pay too much. I wish I had found one with so little miliage on it. My 89 firebird had 125k on it when I bought it 5 years ago it had 175k on it now. I paid 2500 for it, and have probably put 2k in it, rebuilt trany with shift kit 1k, and 600 paint, and rebuilt the steering 200, and altinator, waterpump, hatch structs. And of course normal maintance, don't have a figure on it off the top of my head.

Of course this is high miliage but the car has never been wrecked. The inside was in perfect shape when I got it. Now the driver side seat if ripping. I also have some damage I have yet to fix after someone tried to steel my car, but couldn't get it to crank so they took my radio.

I live just north of atlanta in GA so there is no salt or sea to worry about for rust, which the car has none. I don't drive it when it snows the 1 time a year, just because these cars don't like slippery stuff.

So your price a little high I would say, but not ripped off. It is getting harder and harder to find good thirdgens that haven't been riped apart or trashed. I went to los vegas a year and a half ago, they have a car museum that all cars there are for sell. The thirdgens they had were all 6500 +, but they all were in perfect shape, not a scratch on the paint, engine, underside, or anywhere. They had 4 camaro hard tops, I'f they had a t-top in that shape I would of probably bought it and drove home instead of flying.
