Delete Center Console

I have been thinking about modifying the interior and deleting the center console.
Has anyone done this mod? How did you handle the mounting of the heater controls and radio?
I've found an after-market e-brake setup that is very slim and can be mounted very close to the floor.
I think that this would make the interior seem much larger and I could mount a much shorter throw manual shifter.
Let me know what you think.

Get a bench seat and a B&M truck shifter. Then take your date to the drive-in. FUN,FUN,FUN

remove it and find out!

very odd.........definately looses the sports car feel though.

do it clean and find a way to neatly flush the shifter and your all good!

I don't know if this would work, but you could keep the console and go with a bench seat at the same time. Not sure if that is what you were going for ot not. Just kind of integrate the two together or something. Mmmmm, date at movie. Sounds like a plan.

Go El Camino. Throw a mattress in the back

I was doing interior work and had my console out for a day. I usually rest my hand on the sifter (hence the 5 speed) and it totally sucked that day on my way to work.

btw ...... you guys are just underrating the potential of the back seats ...

I'm 6'3" there is no back seat if you ask me. That's why the passenger seat folds all the way down.

I installed my new hurst shifter and took my car for a ride with no console. It drove me crazy. No place to put my elbow and the extra noise was anoying. But you should do what you want. Rock on!

6'2", 160 lbs ...... i somehow managed. But yea, it felt like my arm was dead cause there was nothing for my elbow to rest on when i had the console out. Its funny cause you can see the paint is worn right around the

Since the cars have no real glove box the center console is a must for storage. Without a place to rest your arm you lose that sports car feel. Even though mine is an automatic I still rest my hand on the shift **** and the console. Interesting to see how you could delete it. I would miss my console to much.

I had my console out for about a week and i liked the way your arm has a lot of room to get the best and strongest grip on your shifter(5 speed). I thought about keeping it out so that i had a great shifting feel, but like you guys are saying, no arm rest, no storage, and making it look good would be a project.

i think a custom box/center console would be cool. just make it out of fiberglass and/or MDF board...that way itll be sound deadening and we could make custom shapes n stuff...i know it can be done after seeing all those crasy *** subwoofer boxes, heh. i pulled my center console too (broke it actually...lol) and it does look wierd, but it got me thinking about custom ones....

I have been thinking this for awhile, since I have always liked the Roadrunner's with no center console. But in our cars, you sit so low a pistol grip shifter wouldnt make sense.

But......I took my console out and now my car wont start.
Did I disconnect something, or was it a coincidence?

Probably disconnected the neutral safety switch on the shifter.

This shows a little better view, you can easily just not install the part behind the shifter.....

Just install carpet over the rest of the area.......

Also this is a thirdgen camaro, but it has a close resemblence to the thirdgen....

It's a 1970 Cuda...

That is awesome, is that your interior?

If so, what kind of carpeting is that?

Get a radio/HVAC pod from a Firebird, those are separate from the rest of the console, right?

Hi,

I just happened across this discussion; I'm the owner of the '70 Cuda and built the center console pictured above. For the carpet, I used some stuff I found at Autozone - they usually have a few rolls of the stuff near the floor mats and stuff - its about $10. I don't recall the size, something like 3-4 feet wide and maybe 6-8 feet long. Anyway, it worked pretty good and (IMHO) looks nice on there too; I used carpet/headliner adhesive (also available at Autozone) to attach it to the plywood shell.

Thanks for the nice comments about the console; sorry to come in so late, but like I said I just happened to stumble across this discussion and thought I would chime in and let you know where I got the carpet.

TTYL!
