Power window motor replacement
I picked up a pair of new motors but now that I have the door panels off it looks very tight. Is it just the 2 rivets holding it in? Can I use bolts to replace the rivets? Is there room for your hand? The new rivets are 1/4 inch and I can't find a tool. Can I just remove the motor guts? How? Should I just forget the hole thing, lube it up and live with slow windows? Thanks

Bring it in.
Power windows are not worth the trouble.
I had a super hard time, not to mention cuts and gashes....

I had a super hard time, not to mention cuts and gashes....
first i wedged the window in the full up position..
then i just drill the three reivets out holding the motor to the regulator.
than i had to get the new one in, but first i drilled the holes bigger in the door sheet metal to fit the bolts..
after that the hardest put was getting the motor all ligned up and to get the nuts on the bolts..
it took my and my gradfather about 45 minutes to do my passengers side...
my drivers side needs to be replaced soon, its slow but still works and does not pause like my pass. side did..
good luck, take your time..

I'm with KJ........take it to have done......Just like him,.....I cut myself all to pieces. I'm scared for like. Unless you've got arms like spaghetti, you'll have a heck of a time. But if you do decide to tackle it yourself, watch that #@$! spring. Lotsa pressure on that thing.

Chiltons describes it best
If you don't have one, HIGHLY recommend getting one. Basically though, drill the holes out and use bolts and U-clips. All the hardware is available at Home Depot and NAPA. It is a pain, but worth the cost of getting them done by someone else. I have done both in my current RS and three in my last RS. If you have any specific questions, let me know.

Are the u-clips strong enough? Seems if you torque down on the screw the u-clip will strip. How about tapping the new motor for say a 1/4-20? I really hate working on stuff where you can't fit your hands. Is the spring attached to the motor? Do you just slip the motor off the gear once the rivets are removed? Thanks guys.

When you remove the regulator and the motor, drill a hole through the regulator and the backplate. Put a bolt though it so the spring does not release. Drill the rivets and remove the motor. When reassembling the motor and regulator, use 3/16" nuts and bolts with loctite. When putting the assy back in to the door, use the u-clips, 1/4"-20 x 1/2" or 6mm X 1 X 13 bolts and loctite. The ones I have in now have been in for over a year and a half with no problem. The biggest problem you will have is lining up the u-clips to accept the motor and regulator during install. Some times the u-clips fall into the door. Easy to retrieve, but a pain after the first two or three times.

One word of advice: Patience, Patience, Patience
It's a tight working area if your arms are "normal" size. My wife actually helped me since her arms were much smaller than mine. Cuts and gashes are part of this job. Good luck...

Oh yeah, check under the tech articles on the front page. Under general repair, there's an article called "power windows 101". It might help.
