Instrument cluster

I did a little search here and found some neat things and cool setups already done by people. I want to build an instrument panel out of aluminum to house my Auto Meters guages I have out of an older project car. I have a ( you guessed it!!) 92 Z28. The factory instruments are attached to a printed circuit looking thing. Is it possible to retain my check engine light and turn signal indicators? Can I simply go through the wires and pick and choose what I need? I don't see why not, I just want some feed back from others who have done it. Thanks in advance.

That is a good question. I am not sure if the warning lights are ran off of a smaller voltage, or not. I didn't use any extra lights on mine besides the turn signals and high beam light.

I do not believe the turn signals and indicator lights are run off less volatgae then 12. If I where you, I would find a beat up gauge cluster out of any car in the junkyard and use the decals in the cluster for the signals and stuff and glue them to pre cut holes in the aluminum panel with a light behind it. Getting a light to stay on the panel will be your idea, Cant help ya there. I say this because I wouldnt want to cut up a perfectly good dash cluster from a 92z28. I have the correct color coded wires for all the dash stuff. My car is a 91 so your shouldnt be too far off. The chiltons book has the 1992 models all by themsleves for some reason and I had to use both years (91-92) to do my 4th gen dash swap

I haven't had the dash appart in a long time. Last time I was in there was to change out some bulbs like two years ago. I am not all that concerned with the high beam indicator, only the turn signals and mostly the check engine light. I figured on using some of those small 1/4or 3/8 inch LED for that.

Can the wires I require for the indicator lights and things like the fuel guage simply be disconnected from the factory setup and changed to the lights and guages I want?

4th Gen dash, huh? That sounds purtty kewl!!

Hey 92zzz28,
I have a pdf file with the cluster pinouts if you would like it. I used 1/4 lights for my turn signals from Radio Shack. They work great. Let me know if you want me to e-mail that file to you.

Ebay look...

If you go to Ebay and do a word search "camaro dash" you can find cutouts already made out of aluminum for about $17.Hope this helps. You can also do a search by seller.Look for the seller name speedhut. He has cutouts for various cars including 3rd and 4th gen camaros.
