Best way to repair chipped paint?

I have a section of paint thats chipped off my front bumper from some little bastard, a shopping cart, and no parental supervision. I'd like to be able to repair it somehow and not repaint the whole bumper cover b/c I'm having the car repainted in the spring. I'm just looking for a temporary fix that will look ok from a few feet away. Should I use dupli-color in a can, or brush it on? wetsand? Any help would be awesome.

it kinda depends on the color.....

It will depend on the color as to the best way to repair the chip. I dont recommend duplicolor because their color usually doesnt match. Go to your local Automotive paint supply store. They usually can bring up your color by your factory code & mix you a small quantity. they can usually walk you through the best way to touch it up as well. If it were me i would use a brush & touch up the chip several times allowing the color to dry between each coat. ( the idea is to build up the color to matc the height of your existing color ) then when I have acheived my proper height i would lightly wet sand the touched up area with 2000 grit wet/paper then polish back to a luster. Good Luck, Joe

The thing that sucks is that it's a pretty big spot. Maybe 2" x10". Think it'll still work? Thx

Nasty and Joc,
I have deleted the picture posted by "the runs" from the server, due to it being very vulgar. I will not say what it was, but it had been reported to the moderators by someone. Heck, I was offended, and I am not easy to offend in any way.
I will be keeping my eyes on ppl who insist on posting material of this kind.

for Nasty_Bird_90 and jocww

Hello again Nasty_Bird_90, if your damage is that large I would say you need to find a good body shop, No offense, unless your a exsperienced painter. Hey jocww, if your bumper cover has hairline cracks or cracks like a broken egg shell, this wont work for your application either. This will only work on small imperfections like that horrible rock chip on that hood you have been protecting for so long. The cracking in your cover can usually be repaired but all must be repaired & not just painted over. If you paint over that cracking it will hide at first but as the good ole sunshine gets to the paint it will begin to re-appear. I would suggest a body shop for you as well. Sorry guys, I know i had nothing good to say, but its how i see it with the information i have. my suggestion is, take it by a body shop & get their opinion since they can actually look at the damage. Good Luck....

No problem. That is why there are moderators on every board. There are trolls out there that just want to start trouble and flame wars. This is a tech only site, and those who want to post stuff like that, or non-tech, can take it elsewhere.
