IROC/Z28 ground effects
IROC/Z28 ground effects
Hey everyone,
I have 88 camaro coupe and been thinking of putting IROC or Z28 (or aftermarket) ground effects on it. So far I haven't seen too many places that would sell everything including the front spoiler. I did find a couple of sites but it looks like everything is sold in pieces and they don't even have all the pieces.
Question: Are there any significant differences in bodies from 82 to 92 that would prevent used ground effects from one those cars to fit mine? The reason I am asking is that I actually found one site (if someone whats the name, I wrote it down at home) that sells replica's of original IROC ground effects for $650. But they have 2 kits, one for 82-84 and the other one for 85-87. I NEED 88!!! I've been searching for about 2 months now.
Is anyone aware of any body changes between 87 to 88 that would prevent the kit from hooking up right? Is it something that can be modified? Is there another place that sells stuff for 88?
BTW, can we please not start flame discussion who likes factory ground effects and who doesn't. I know it is a hot topic with a lot of people. I am building the car for autocross and at speeds above 100mph, front spoiler does help to squeeze out a little more g's

For that price, I'd go with the 91-92 Camaro style gfx. I think those are the best looking ones.
There is a set of rockers and door peices in the classifieds right now.
How large is the autocross track you run at? 100mph is pretty fast.

if your car is an 88, shouldn't it have ground effects on it? i thought that was the first year they put them on all of the models. if your car does not have gfx on it, you are going to have to get all the gfx, as well as the rear bumper and the front end.
if you're interested, i have the rear bumper, the rear quarter gfx, the door gfx, the rocker gfx, the front chin spoiler, and the front end in the 85-90 style for sale. this is all for sale since zepher is the man and found me a trans am

if your car is a 88 it should have ground effects, but the changes were: 82-84: ground effects were smaller than other years 85-90: same gound effects for the IROC, Z28, RS, and the SC in 88 only, these ground effects were larger than the 82-84 style and used differant front and rear bumper, the best looking ground effects IMO were the 91-92 style, they were used on all the camaros for those 2 years, they used the same front bumper as the 85-90 but differant back bumper, the sides have scoops in them as does the front chin spoiler has on the sides of it, the back bumper and 1/4 panel ground effects were not the same as previous years because they are shaped a bit differant. the most common ground effects to find are the 85-90 because they were produced the same for 6 years, while the 82-84 where only 3 years, and the rarest the 91-92 for only 2 years, those are rare cause there is more of the 91-92's still on the road than the others, and the point that they were only produced for 2 years, also they are the ones that are wanted more than other years. i hope that explains it for u, but why doesnt your 88 have ground effects?

Yeah, I thought the ground effects were all the same from 85-90 on the Camaros.... Whether you had the 85-87 Z28, 85-90 IROC, 88 SC, 89-90 RS 90 Z28...

Thanks guys for the info. My 88 does have ground effects, but while digging through everything internet has to offer, I came across a newsgroup post on google where someone said IROC ground effects were 1-2 inches lower.
Then again, I haven't been able to find any more info on this difference and you guys say they are all the same. Probably shouldn't trust everything out there, but that's why I am here.
I've also seen a camaro the other day which seemed much less ground clearance than the one in my garage, but that car was probably lowered. How much can they typically be lowered? I am justing starting to work on mine and this is my first project, so haven't researched that topic yet.
Zepher, if I make it move, this would be my first car that will have enough muscle for any kind of racing. My future-to-be brother-in-law been going to Watkins Glen for the past couple of years. I am thinking of joining him one of these days.
Thanks guys, there really is some great info on this message group. Hope someday I would be able to contribute as well

Some of my friends race at VIR (Virginia International Raceway) and it looks really fun.
This is my friends' car that Road Races,

Ah, that isn't really autocrossing, that's Road Racing, and that is what I am building my Trans Am for.
I don't know, that's what he called it. And yeah, that's what I want to try. I am just getting into the spirit of things. Graduated from college 5 months ago, before I had no time for life what so ever for 4.5 years.
That's one cool ride your friend has. What is that?

That car is a 95 RX7 (I think it's a 95, I keep forgetting the years of everyones cars).
It is setup for road racing, very stiff ride and handles like it is on rails.
