Question about Autometer gauges into an 84 Z...
I'm not really familiar with this board so I apologize if someone asked this or if this is frequently asked. I'm looking to put some Autometer Ultra-Lite gauges into my car. I'm going to start with an A/F gauge, Tranny temp, and Fuel Pressure in the A-Pillar. I was wondering what advantages and differences there are between electrical and mechanical gauges. Also, can the matching in-dash electrical speedo from the ultra-lite series along with the rest of the gauges be replaced inside the dash?

The really is no better/worse when it comes to electrical over mechanical gagues-especially aftermarket ones. Mechanicals are all full sweep gagues so it spreads out the numbers further and makes them easier to read and some like that look better anyhow. Down side is having to plumb all the lines and then running them into the car with possible chance of failure in the future which might lead to oily or soaked carpet and all in all a big mess. Electrical gagues are all 180* sweep, unless you step up to the new full sweep high dollar ones, just as accurate and lots easier to hook up since all your running are wires, plus no chance of oil line rupturing inside cockpit!!!! I took the electricals as an easy way out and am happy with them. buddy runs mechanicals and has no problems to date, I got the Phantoms and he runs Ultra-Lites. These are what I mean by they're not a full sweep, check out my pic.

They have electric fuel pressure gauges too, here's a link to a 15 psi gauge at summit.

Johns, that was pretty much the route I wanted to go, just a speedo, tach, and fuel level gauge with the turn signals in the dash, and then have water temp, oil pressure, voltmeter mounted elsewhere. I don't think I'm going to do a fuel pressure on the A-pillar now because they are an expensive gauge. I definitely want the A/F gauge though.

johnsjj2, nice setup. Im planning on doing this over the winter. How hard was it getting 2 5" gauges to fit in there and what did you use to mount them? Did you take out the entire cluster or did you use some of it. I have a spare 91 cluster and was looking at it and I can figure out which way to go with it. Do yo uhave other pics of your gauges or the installation of them?
