why does my car only register 85?

I have a question- how can a sports car with a V8 only register 85mph. Is this the top speed, and if it isn't- is there a third gen speedometer I can put in that registers higher?
Please help!

I'm assuming your car is an 85. You could get a gauge cluster from an 86-89 IROC that goes up to 145. 90-92 have electric speedos, which take more work to swap into your car. Check out ebay and the classifieds on this site, they pop up every now and then.

Your speedometer has absolutely nothing to do with the top speed of the car. The push in the 80s was for 85mph speedos. Most cars back then had it. As mentioned, you can get 145mph speedos from the late 86 to 89 cars and it is a direct swap with no other changes necessary.

This is going way back when U.S. car manufactures decided we didn't need to see a 120 MPH speedo because the legal limit back then was 55 MPH. And also use this for an excuse to install cheap non-rated tires on the car. Anyway ,, yes your car will go faster than indicated but not as fast as the speed rating for your tires. If your car came with original "S" rated tires then chances are you your will no go over 110 MPH . This then control by a computer chip or a governer. Remember they have to watch out for law suite. Talk about some

Yea, I know, it's lame. I'm swapping a '88 IROC cluster into my '83. BTW...that's a sweet ride you've got there. Love to see stock lookers. :hail:

My 67 Riv has a 145Mph Speedo, but I would never drive it that fast, and yes your car will go faster than 85MPh

Your 85 shouldn't have that dual needle speedo. That was only used from 82-84. In 85 and early in 86, the gauge looked just like the 145, except that it only went to 85mph.

I think you're confusing him with the person who started this thread. The guy who originally made this thread has an 85. Tim has an 82.

Aww, man does that mean that my Isuzu Rodeo really won't go 130 mph? That's funny that my Firebird has an 85 and my SUV has a 130 speedo.
