Shaker Scoop
I think this was recently a topic, but not sure. Anyways. I pose a new idea.
If you were to buy a shaker off a 2nd gen bird. And then cut the proper hole into a standard firebird hood. Would it be possible to get it functioning on a 3rd gen?
-Would the shaker mount on any engine?
-Would cutting the hood compromise its structural integrity?
-Ok, so you open the hood and the shaker stays on the engine. It may look functional (compared to bandit II's), but is it actually functional?

i'm thinking about doing this myself. i don't think it should affect the integrity of the hood. the scoop hooks up to the air cleaner. i believe that if it's hooked up the way it is supposed to, it should work just like a cowl hood. once i get my motor in, i'm going to look into it.

I have already started gathering parts to attempt this conversion on my 85 TA. I have a shaker from a 79 TA that I am going to use, a spare TA hood, and a couple of air cleaner bases to work with. Some of the issues that I have already found:
The actual scoop is positioned in such a way on the 2nd gen air cleaner that it will set too far rearward (toward the firewall) to clear.
The air cleaner housing is a different diameter, so the shaker is not a "bolt on" to the 3rd gen air cleaner housing. I have not yet tried using the entire 2nd gen cleaner yet, I think there may be a height issue with the 2nd gen being too tall as well as the previously mentioned issue.
Cutting the hood will involve cutting into some of the reinforcements. Given the size of these hoods, I expect that it will affect the integrity. Also getting an clean, factory look is going to be a chanllenge.
In order to make it functional, the shaker will need to be cut open at the rear. Later 2nd gen shakers were non functional. There are kits available that will allow you to install a functional flapper, or you could fab your own.
I did a search on the boards for Shaker Scoop and found several threads with additional info on this topic.

Dude buy an ss hood scoop and a K&N X-streme filter an there you go fresh air to the engine.Thats what i did and man let me tell you what a difference .(I have to get a digital camera),It looks so bad as@ driving down the road with my exhaust cut-out and then it being a firebird formula black with t-tops so sweet the faster i go the more air gets shoved in the engine.I could feel a difference in 30mph and up man its killer espically when i cruise at 90mph and up.
Cant wait till i get my 383 stroker Procharger supercharger enige espically with the T-56 6 speed with 4.11's in the rear.(Maybe a shot of nos also just to see what happens)

I put a shaker on my 87 firebird 305 with carb ,it doe's bolt right up to air cleaner but remember there are differant size shakers some lager at the base.
also shaker will not fit facing backwards but it will work perfect as a ram air but rain killed me.
Of course it might work better on a camero because the hood is flatter then a firebird.

If you're not stuck on the shaker there is a nice steel cowl induction hood for the thirdgens with all of the internal ducting at thirdgen (year one). Try yearone .com

I think a Mopar Hemi Shaker would look better on a 3rdGen Firebird than a TA one would. The TA shaker is just too small for these cars IMO, but the Hemi Shaker would be just right.

What year/engine size shaker did you use? Height of the whole stock setup is where my difference is mainly, as well as being set to far rearward. (If the shaker is set as originally designed, it would hit the firewall.) For your setup, that probably worked out OK since you reversed it.
Would be interested in any info you would like to share on how you cut the hood. What tool did you use, and how did you deal with the bracing underneath? Did it make the hood less rigid, especially around the hole?

I used a jigsaw to cut hood and it did loose some of its strength around hole but held up just fine, and your right it did sit wrong so i simply drilled out the rivits and rebolted the shaker part were i wonted it an easy job.
I also cut air cleaner lid down to same size as filter so the air could go right in worked great making it a real ram air.
I also no longer have this on my car rain was a killer but i do wont to make a new setup that was my first try Im looking into other ideas.
I'm not sure what year scoop is I got it at a car show I still have it I will look for it tomorrow and see if it has part number on it.
I do no its the small base one because when i bought the ring that holds it too air cleaner there were to sizes i got the large one too be safe which was to big LOL so i simple drilled rivits out of it and cut it down to size bolted braket back on and a perfect fit.

I have done this also, but in order to make the scoop sit facing the rear, I may need to modify the base so that it will clear the firewall. Have not reattached the two yet, need to adapt to the air cleaner base first.

This is the next step for me. Good idea on the ring, will have to take a closer look at that.

I agree... the price is insane... but if you got the money to restore a Hemi Cuda....
