5 cent seat belt fix
My understanding is that sticking seat belts are a common problem on our cars. Now not sure how common of a cause this is for those problems, but thought I'd post it anyways. My driver's seat belt started having trouble coming out, somtimes working, sometimes sticking.
To pull the belt out, I sometimes had to open the cover and push down on the little locking lever shown with the arrow in the first pic.
Tonight I finally pulled the belt assembly out to clean it and I happend to notice something moving around in the bottom of the assembly, just under the spool where the belt winds up. With a little shaking and the help of a set of needle nose pliers, I was able to get ahold of a nickel and pull it out. See pic 2. Now the belt works great, no sticking at all.
Apparantly the nickel was just thin enough to get under the locking lever and prevent it from releasing fully. When I pushed down on the lever it released enough to allow the belt to come out. I think that sometimes the nickel would slide to a different position and the seat belt worked.
If it had been stuck down deep in there, I probably would never have seen it and would have blamed the mechanism for being faulty. Got me to thinking, how many seat belts are considered "faulty", but may just have something like a nickel, small stone, or even dirt built up in the bottom preventing the lever from releasing fully.
Anyways, now happy with working seatbelt
and a nickel richer!!

SOmeone busted the glass out of my moms old grand am once, I had to take the seat belt off twice because glass had worked its way in to there. Those little chunks saftey glass breaks into is really bad for the operation of gears and latches.
glad you got yours working, I bet I have $10 in change in my car from it falling out of my pockets, but I will be putting in my carpet in the next few weeks so I will have to empty out my savings account (the change under my seat)
