4thgen Auto Shifter in a 3rdgen

I am wanting to do an 98-02 auto console swap and was wondering if i put in a 4th gen shifter if i would still have the clearance issues and stuff or if it would bolt right in with no real mods.

I put a 4th gen shifter in my 89 along with the console for a 2000 bird and I had to use the 4th gen shifter so it would clear the auto top plate and still use the shift indicator and it works great. but had to do some mods to get the shifter to fit. like cutting the sheet metal on the tranny tunnel where the 3rd gen shifter mounted orginally and cut off the shifter lock solenoid off the 4th gen shifter and redrill some holes in the tranny tunnel to get the shifter to mount to the tunnel and then put the console in and get it lined up to the shifter there is one ten mill. screw that screws into the shifter. that goes through the console and that holds the console in place and the then two ten mill. screws in the glove box area those screw in where the org. console mounted. then you should be able to put the top plate on. the 4th gen shifter sit lower than the 3rd gen does( 4th gen sits in the dish shaped pocket on the tranny tunnel and the 3rd gen sifter sits on a plate over the pocket. you may have to take a grinder to the top of the 4th gen shifter because the indicator may hit the shifter and rub on it and squeak when going through the gears. I did. make sure that you take the nuetral saftey switch off the 3rd gen shifter and put it back on the forth gen shifter so that you will have backup lights where they need to be. and you may have to readjust the steering lock cable to be able to take the key out of the ignition. I had to do that also. the whole job took about two to three hours to do. then all that is left is to find a place for the power window switches and power mirror switch if available. I put my power windows switches on the plate in front of the shifter and I am goint to put the power mirror switch on the door like the camaros had org.

Pics resizing

The best way i found to resize the pics is to do it in paint shop...
I have a 2.0 meg camera.... I open microsoft paint and click on strech,, and drop the number to 50 for both instead of 100, and works well..

I'm looking for the power mirror switch for a camaro that is in the drivers door so I can complete the swap the dealer doesn't know what I am talking about though. It's in the black trim on the door panel in front of the armrest.

the switch is still in the console area but I didn't want to cut the console up just yet. thought if I put in the drivers door it would look factory and still be easy to adjust the mirrors when needed. bought the whole console new from the dealer lower 100.00 which came with everything but the coin holder and cig lighter and the upper for 60.00 which came with the ashtray.but had to buy the cover for the opening in front of the shifter that's for the convertible top 9.00 then bought the 4th gen shifter for 90.00 also. and replaced the t-handle for 9.00 the leather wrapped one was 90.00 didn't see the need in that due to not having the steering wheel and the e-brake.

Am I understanding you correctly, you put in a new console for under $200 from the dealer? I have been wanting to get my hands on a 98+ manual console, and what I have found so far, these are in the 150 range, used. I may just have to check out the dealer. Still got the part numbers?

I have a brand new top plate for a manual trans (5-speed) that I never used. has boot , ash tray. the parts I ordered were for a 2000 firebird. I don't know if I still have the part numbers but I can get them from the dealer if you need them. I also have a used auto top plate but has broken ash tray door but other wise in good shape. like I said before the lower part has all the needed parts i.e console door ,hinge, cig. lighter ports etc. the only other thing needed is the pocket or cover for the opening in front of the shifter. hope this helps

like I said before the lower was around a 100.00 and the upper was around 60.00 new from the dealer but you still need the pocket or cover for the opening in front of the shifter I used the one for the convertible top and cut the one opening bigger to put the power window switch in. and cut a new hole the put the other switch in. but with the manual trans it should go in very easily( the console itself).I'm pretty sure that the lower part is either for the auto or manual trans the difference is in the upper plate. the one thing cool is that you go from not having any cup holders to having four .( two in front and two in back).

wilyk9 ,watch around on the classifieds. also go to some of the 4th gen boards.
i got my 93-97 off of the classifides here. wound up having to buy the upper console but being i have an inside friend at a dealership he got it for me for $42. it came with the rubber insert for the cup holder, the rubber part for the change area and the boot. all in all i think i spent $85 on mine but yea it will cost ya a lil but the benifits are worth it for te cup holders holov mentioned.
holov do ya still have the 5 speed part and if ya do how much do ya want for it ?

yes I still have the top plate for the 5-speed. It's brand new never been installed. but don't know if it will fit the 93-97 console though. never checked. I'll take 45.00 for it. I can ship it for free from my work(little perk).
