"Custom" horn button for aftermarket steering wheel.
I called this custom, although Im using a stock horn button. In any case I think it turned out pretty good. I love my pilot steering wheel but I missed having the bird on the horn button. I stumbled across this horn button on ebay for like 2 bucks so I snagged it. Maybe someone on here can identify the years/models it came on. Turns out the bird emblem pops right out and is approx. the same size as the button that comes with pilot and some grant wheels. First off here are some pics of the button before I fitted it on. Sorry for the crappy quality. Oh by the way...the bird in the button is silver. More chrome actually. Its nice and bright and stands out great.

Here are a few shots installed. Took me about 2 hours. Sorry for the glare on the head on shot...but the angle shot looks good.
Just a before shot first off...
Heres the new button. Now, I still havent decided on final mounting. I still want it to sit in alittle more, but I wanted to make sure I liked it before I did anything completely permanent.
A brief description of what I did. I picked up a new center section/horn button from autozone that said Grant on it. Its identical to the one that comes with the pilot wheel. I figured if I messed that one up no biggie. I started by taking out the actual button and using a palm sander, I made the surface flat and slimmed the button down so the new button would sit closer to the wheel. Make sense? Good. The rest was easy. Just re-assembly. Attatching the new button to the front of the modified old button is up to your imagination. Im using very thin but very sticky double sided tape. Like I said...its temporary. I want to hear some opinions! Any questions please ask.

Thanks for the compliments!! I drove around with it all day today and I like it. Ide be happier if I could get it alittle more flush...but I think it still looks good.
Hey scott's85T/A, are you talking about the color of the bird in the horn button? If so, the one I have is silver. The pics dont really show it too well. It actually stands out really nice. More chrome than silver.
Does anyone know what years/models this horn center is from? I have never seen it before.

I also have a pilot steering wheel. I used the chevy bowtie horn button from grant that fits their GT and signature series wheels. It fit right in. They also make ones with the pontiac arrow, and ones that say camaro, and many other makes.

I had that same idea for my Grant steering wheel, its pretty much the perfect size....that is the same button that came with my 82 TA. I've been wanting to get another one from the junkyard though so I don't have to hack up the little tab on my original. I plan on someday having my OEM wheel restored and wrapped in leather.

very nice! I have a grant wheel and wanted a bird emblem in the center.. now I know how if i can just find it! I saw the buttons made with the pontiac symbol and the one that says camaro... but they don't make one with the firebird emblem. I'll stop rambling now. Sweet mod!

I saw other buttons from grant or whichever it was. It had the pontiac arrow on it. I didnt really like it because I think the Firebird symbol goes much better with the car. My 67 pontiac has the arrows all over it and it suits it just fine. But I like the bird better. Ever notice how there isnt much pontiac stuff out there? Steering wheel covers are all ford, dodge, chevy... Or anything with a vehicle make name for that matter. Thanks for the compliments. Ive definetly decided to keep it. Im thinking about using the Pilot center cap because the pilot part can be pryed out....letting the new button sit down further. Im trying to find another bird button too just in case.
Another thing I thought of is that button I bought is painted from behind. It wouldnt be too hard to take the black off and change the color...or maybe even change the outline color of the bird.
