Hatch Glass black tape stuff? Can this be fixed? Can I take it off?

Here is a picture of what I'm talking about....it looks like some kind of seal...but..it looks like black electrical tape or something. Anyhow...it's lining the defroster... it's starting to peel off....and it looks like crap. Would it be safe to take off?....I'm going to get my rear window re-tinted..and I want it to look good...and this stuff makes it looks like crap..

I recently scraped that crap off of a junk hatch that I bought. It came off really good w/ a razor blade, but it just didn't look right. I don't really know how to explain it, but when you looked at it from the outside the defrost lines looked dirty or something. Not sure if this helped or not, sorry I don't have a picture. Maybe it would have looked better w/ some tint on it.

:werd: I went out and checked the hatch on my car and it doesn't have that on it. It must just be on certain years or models, mine is an 89 Iroc.

I wonder if a dealer ship would know what it actually is?...I wonder if they could replace it? It's one of those small things that really bugs me....if anyone have and pictures...or ideas...anything at all...let me know.

Could you get a better picture of it ? (a little more f.o.v. of the whole hatch) ?
If it's in plain sight of you looking at it through the back glass (in or out), it doesn't belong.
The only sealant on the hatch glass is between the decklid and the glass and the metal surround strip that goes around the visable outside edge of the hatch glass.

It belongs there.....I just looked at a buddies of mine and he has it on his. Anyhow.....I just took it off....it is really really sticky....it looks fine...I think it'll look fine when I get the window tinted. I'm still going to go up to the dealership and ask them what it's there for. I'll get a picture of it tomorrow and post it...

It doesn't belong there unless you have parts on your hatch that no other car has. Check out the history and restoration board and look at the pics of the 100 and 200 mile cars. ALL ORIGINAL cars and none of them have sticky crap over the defrosters. Looks to me like someone put electrical tape over the lines. Maybe you and your buddies car went under the same rednec's knife at some point in time.

I think I know what it's for.....when I got my car...the window was tinted....I think they put some kind of black sealant tape there because they couldn't tint around that area. That's what I've come up with. Anyhow...I got it all off finally and it looks great...next up, will be getting the window tinted
