wiring for a fog light switch (up to 1989)
wiring for a fog light switch (up to 1989)
I added this to the bottom of an existing thread but it was getting a bit long and think i might not get noticed...
I've retro-fitted fog lights and managed to get the stock switch to work (fog lights illuminate correctly) by testing with a multimeter the readings from the defogger but I can't get the indicator lamp or background lamp to work (so I might have misjudged)
I know this is a lot to ask, but can someone do me a favour and look at the wiring in their car and/or test the current?
I don't have a stock connector for back of switch, but according to wiring diagrams I found on this site, the following 3 wires contol the switch:
brown (power in)
black (earth)
purple (switch on -power out)
There are 5 connectors for the switch. I'm assuming the top 2 (on their own) are for the back illumination (but i can't get this to work, maybe the bulb is shot)
can someone tell me what order the wires are connected? (assuming the coloured wires are as above looking at the back of the switch unit, with it the correct way up or send me a photo of the back of the unit with the wires connected? (even better!!!)
many thanks!
Andrew

Okay, according to my schematic for the fog lights, there are four wires to the switch.
Pin "A" = purple (C3 at C100 becoming dark blue/white wire to foglights)
Pin "B" = brown (C2 at C100 to pin 1 of foglamp relay.
Pin "C" = black (ground)
Pin "P" = gray ( inst lmp fuse)

The brown wire is powered when the headlights and/or park lights are on. The brown with white tracer powers the relay when the switch is on. The grey wire provides variable power for the illumination light - same as the dash lights. The purple wire comes from the realy and lights up the indicator light when the fog lights are on. And the black is the ground wire.

thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I only have the switch and no original wiring so don't know which pin is which (as there are 5, one must be a blank) - I guess the bottom 3 are A B & C and the top one P?
Assuming A B & C are in order (though with these cars anything could be the case!), which end is A, passenger side or driver side(easier to see which end i mean than left or right) ?
thanks

I saw your other post, and I was looking for it again to respond to you, but I found you here, lol. So here's a bad webcam pic I just took of the back of the foglight switch, though I'm not sure if you're looking for this or the back of a defogger switch.
Black is the switch ground(under dash).
Grey goes to an instrument panel fuse(for illumination)
Brown, Brown/white, and purple go to the foglights, though I'm not sure which controls what since I don't use the switch. It's for looks only, but illuminated.

working now!
thanks guys...
tried to say yesterday but my pc was playing up. From the photo and diagrams I've now managed to get it working! Many thanks!! I'm in UK and have to attach a rear fog light (no relay) -I managed to get it to light up the indicator by reversing what would have been the purple wire feeding back from the relay, instead i feeded it from the button power output
Attached image to prove it!! (much easier than changing the cluster!)
