Fire extinguishers what kind, where, and how big?
Basically I want to put a fire extinguisher in my car, hopefully I won't need it but its nice to have there.
I was wondering what kind is best for cars, what size people normally carry, and where to put it, I was thinking on the trans tunnel on the passenger floor.

make sure you get one that puts out oil and eletrical fires.
mine is 26 inches high by 9 inches wide aprox 60+ lbs, but its for my towncar. you may need one a bit smaller

or is it a k class foam for grease won;t help you on electrical.
abc would be fine for all car use althought it is messy when you use it but then again the other option is to let i burn.
i've seen some nice chrome ones with flames that would look cool in the car.h

I have one from Wal-Mart that I bought, there like 10 bucks and made for electrical and fuel fires. I even went ahead and primed and painted it a blue and put a NOZ sticker from autozone on it... laf... I get people all the time out at the college pointing to it and asking me what size of shot I'm running. Then I get to watch them turn shades of red when I tell them it's a fire extinguisher.
Oh BTW mines strapped to the roll bar on the driver side. I have another I still need to prime and paint for the other side... then I'll have dual matching NOZ bottles.

Guys that is the type of business i'm in. You will want a halon extinguisher in your car. A 2 1/2 -5lb is about all you need. I keep one between my rear seats. Oh and on a little note, the ones you get from walmart are junk. We have had casses where they just explode for no reason. So keep that in mind for those who have bought them from walmart.

halon ones are prefable, but pricy.
where?
well for the cheap dry chemical ones, home depot and lowes.
but for a quality extinguisher, look in your phonebook.
i write software for B-tech, a division of Brooks Equipment Company... one of the largest fire equipment companys in the country... im probly getting a all out halon system in the future... cheap
right now, i have a small halon one under the dash by the passengers feet, and a 10lb dry chem in the trunk. theres been more then one occasion that ive seen someone with a engine fire and ive had to use my extinguisher on their car.size?
as large as you can get... lol.

Hmm, I've had the Wal Mart one in my car for a couple years, but it would be just my luck that it would explode right after I finish the interior. Maybe I'll look into the Halon.
Somebody makes a bracket for C4s that lets you mount the extinguisher under the front of the seat. It just attaches to the front seat mounting studs. I like the idea and I'm going to build a bracket to hold mine in the same spot. Easy access without taking up any interior space. Plus, I don't want to put it where everybody sees it. I want them to see my car, not my fire extinguisher.

halon is a gas that does not leave a residue, but i don;t thinkyou can buy new ones anymore, they are not any good for the environment. BC will work it is for grease and electrical, bc is usually co2,

Luckily I was able to put it out with the garden hose before it got BIG and do any damage. The little bottles you guys are showing are good enough to deal with an engine fire?

Well what are you going to do, mount a huge one in the back so some morons can smash your window to have a fire extinguisher fight?
What is the C4 that mounts under your seat, seems like it would have to be pretty small to get under there.

He meant its a bracket designed for the C4 (4th gen Vette), and it probably just sits really low in front of the seat. It won't fit *under* the seat.
In the other sense, C4 isn't a type of fire inhibitor, its a high-explosive firestarter

I need to read more carefully.
That sounds like a good idea though mounting it infront of the seat. Has anyone done it on a thirdgen yet? Definatly don't want a $16 fire extinguisher that close to my nuts though, need a good one.

I got a couple of 2.2 lb. Halon 1301/1211 extinguishers from HERE a few years ago. They are old stock (never used) that were originally from small private aircraft.
Halon Fire Extinguisher
Halon leaves no residue that can destroy your car's engine, interior, electrical system and paint. It is the most effective clean agent available.
While similar in performance, Halon alternatives such as Halotron 1 models are more expensive, larger and heavier than like-rated Halon extinguishers, and they are for non-residential use only. Always compare extinguisher size and weight vs. the UL rating.
Using a given fire size as a benchmark, UL assigns a numerical rating before the letter classification to denote the size of a given type of fire that an extinguisher can put out. For example, a 5B:C fire extinguisher has 2.5 times the firefighting capacity against a flammable liquid and/or electrical fire as a 2B:C extinguisher (Note: “C” class fire extinguishers do not have a numerical rating. The presence of the letter “C” simply indicates that the extinguishing agent is non-conductive.).
All H3R Halon fire extinguishers are effective on A, B and C class fires – although most only carry a B and C rating. B and C class fires are the types of fires most likely to occur in an automotive environment.

Mine! Just big enough to put out an engine fire. Yes i know from experience. But as you can see it did its job cause the car had only minor damage and doing fine. Had to clean and repaint a bunch under the hood. More from the extingishers mess then from the fire! Stuff is corosive. But its better then watching your car burn to the ground!

Upon doing a search, I realized that I am bringing up another dead thread.
How do fire extinguishers hold up in the heat? I live in Southern California where sometimes it reaches 110+ in the summer, which translates to almost double that inside a black interiored car.
I do have tinted windows, but it gets extremely hot in my car and I really don't feel like cleaning up a fire extinguisher explosion, where's one that can withstand high temperatures?
